Mixed reference sample results in changes in 2019 April proof run

The changes in the breeding value estimation result in partly clear ranking shifts. Gordon and Gymnast have the most newcomers among Holstein. Among Red Holstein the Pace Red sons dominate, but Solitair P remains the leader.

Toplist Red Holstein (genomic tested bulls)

News proof run 04-2019

Explanation RZhealth

The restructuring of the genomic estimation system towards a mixed reference sample was carried out with the April proof run. In addition to 38,772 daughter proven bulls in the EuroGenomics countries to date, 130,884 typed cows having own production from “KuhVision” are the basis for the derivation of the genomic estimation formulas. Depending on the trait, this correlates with almost a doubling of the basic information. Moreover, the extended reference sample better represents the German population because all the cows reached their productions under local conditions while ca. 2/3 of the reference sample bulls only have daughter production abroad and sire breeding values from abroad based upon this are converted to the German basis by Interbull. The enhancements of the RZM formula having a current weighting of 40% towards fat yield (before: 20%) and 60% towards protein yield brings additional changes. Those effects cannot be separated from the changes of the annual base shift (now: cows born 2013-2015). Besides undirected effects for particular bulls by the mixed reference sample, there are the following average changes of gEBV compared to December for the bulls in the genomic top list:

Dairy type

The genomic Top-250 includes 39 new bulls in total, 3 of them are in the Top-10. The No.1 is a newcomer as well, Crownmax. He is an Imax (AltaSpring x Mogul) son out of Profit x Platinum x Shamrock. Having RZM 158 and +174 kg fat and protein he is the second highest production sire (+1,663 kg milk, +0.37 % fat, +0.10 % protein). The linear shows medium stature with solid feet & legs and udders (RZE 120, feet and legs 116, udder 121). The new health breeding values fit the high RZN 127, especially RZhoof 114 and RZhealth 113.

Being a production sire with focus on fat Summerlake (DG Charley x Balisto x Mogul) benefits from the higher weighting of fat and goes up by 7 RZM points to 155 and No.2 with RZG 164. He even gains for the high RZS (RZS 134). The high RZudderfit 118 fits that. He is the highest bull for Mastitis resistance in the Top-50. Regarding RZE Summerlake cannot keep up with most of the top-class bulls (RZE 115, feet and legs 116, udder 112).

Gywer RDC (Gymnast x Lobach) on No.3 still has RZG 163, i.e. he wins 3 points (base shift). He improves RZE to 133 (feet and legs 120, udder 131) and RZS to119 (EFit 117). Gywer RDC should breed tall daughters that also work on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 122).

Simon P, new on No.4, is the second highest newcomer and highest polled bull. The polled gene of this Semino (Silver x Balisto) son comes from deep within the dam’s line via Board x Balisto x Epic x Mr.Sam x PolledPlus. The dam of Simon P is a half sister of the popular Abi Red PP. Simon P excels with great production figures (+2,058 kg milk, +0.03 % fat, +0.03 % protein, RZM 155) and promises outstanding daughter calving traits (RZKm 121). The linear is solid without any extremes (RZE 119, feet and legs 117, udder 111).

The second highest of 7 DG Charley sons, Casino (dam: Mardi Gras x Planet, No.5) belongs to the winners of the conversion towards mixed reference samples. He goes up by 4 RZM points (base shift) to 151 (+2,052 kg milk, +0.04 % fat, -0.04 % protein) and 6 points to RZE 124 (feet and legs 117, udder 124). Regarding hoof health he belongs to the better bulls with RZhoof 114.

Suprem (Superhero x Missouri) wins because of the conversion for the production figures (RZM 159, +2,478 kg milk, -0.04 % fat, -0.05 % protein) even though he already was No.1 for RZM. Regarding conformation he loses (base shift) to RZE 115 whereas the clear loss for udder to only 104 really hurts (feet and legs 112). The climb from No.10 to No.6 does not help here either.

The third newcomer in the Top-10 is on No.7, Guardian. He is the highest of the first Guarantee (Boastful x Tango) sons. His dam is a frequently used Canadian AltaSpring daughter descending via MPV and Epic from an US cow family bringing another high newcomer on No.27, Garett. Guardian shows all-round qualities at the highest level: RZM 148 (+1,708 kg milk, +0.13 % fat, +0.02 % protein), RZE 128 (feet and legs 108, udder 132), RZS 126 (EFit 117), RZR 112 (REP 105), RZN 125 (GES 117). He is high especially for Mortellaro resistance (DDc 122) and hoof health (KLG 117).

The Imax (AltaSpring x Mogul) son Intercity enters the Top-10 on No.8. Having more than adequate milk production (+1,916 kg milk, -0.08 % fat, -0.10 % protein, RZM 142) he promises daughters especially strong for udder (133, feet and legs 106, RZE 126). He is also a specialist for low cell score (RZS 133, EFit 113) and longevity (RZN 134, GES 115). He also convinces with the new breeding value for metabolism persistency (RZMetabol) with 116.

The dominance of the Gymnast (Doorsopen x Jabir) sons has decreased. Except Gywer on No.3, there is only one more Gymnast son in the Top-10 of a total of 28 sons, Gigabyte (No.9, dam: Silver x Model). Regarding overall conformation Gigabyte is No.1 of all genomic sires with RZE 140 (feet and legs 122, udder 141). He is also the first choice for robot milking farms with RZRobot 137 (RZS 127, teat length 114). In addition, milk production is great with RZM 142 (+1,721 kg milk, -0.07 % fat, -0.01 % protein).

Lavonte goes up one rank to No.10. With that, Superhero has two sons in the Top-10 as well. The full brother of Lavonte, Superday, is on No.43 (dam: Rubicon x AltaOak). Lavonte is a longevity specialist (RZN 134, GES 114) who should breed medium-sized daughters with good udders (feet and legs 113, udder 124, RZE 123). Lavonte should not be used on heifers (RZKd 95).

More new bulls

Besides the new No.1, Imax (AltaSpring x Mogul) has three more new and very complete sons. Imano (dam: Kooper x Maurice) is on No.13 and he is absolutely faultless at the highest level: RZM 147 (+1,491 kg milk, +0.25 % fat, +0.04 % protein), RZE 121 (feet and legs 111, udder 127), RZS 115, RZN 131, RZR 109, RZKm 118. He can be recommended for robot milking farms, too (RZRobot 116). He is absolutely stunning for Mortellaro resistance with DDc 129 (KLG 115), but also very good for metabolism persistency (META 116).

If you are looking for more conformation among the Imax sons, you should go with Intro (new on No.22) and Instagram (new on No.148). Intro (dam: Jedi x Silver) reaches RZE 130 with outstanding udders (136, feet and legs 116) with medium stature and capacity as all previous Imax sons. Among the half brothers, he is the strongest for protein percentages (+1,023 kg milk, +0.33 % fat, +0.18 % protein, RZM 144). Intro is also highly positive for DDcontrol (115) and RZmetabol (116). A full brother, Image, is on No.35 (RZM 149, RZE 122). Having RZM 136 Instagram is not as high (+1,073 kg milk, +0.31 % fat, +0.03 % protein). However, he is somewhat higher for RZE with 134 (feet and legs 122, udder 133). He also stands for metabolism persistency (META 115). Teat length should be kept in mind when mating (84). Instagram is a maternal half brother of Gigabyte on No.9 (dam: Silver x Model).

Youngster (Yoyo x Afterburner) is new on No.26. The so far only Yoyo (Tailor x Yowza) son offers somewhat more genetic variety via a different sire line-up. He especially convinces with components (RZM 149, +1,202 kg milk, +0.33 % fat, +0.20 % protein) as well as longevity (RZN 123, GES 115) and fertility (RZR 115, REP 109). Having RZE 116 he is not that strong here, but can be used on farms using robot milking systems due to teats slightly placed on the outside (RZRobot 117).

Gymnast has the most progeny in the Top-250 (23 sons), followed by Superhero (18) and Kerrigan (12). Among the many Gymnast sons are 4 new ones. The highest ranking is Genialo, new on No.16. Having RZM 148 he belongs to the best production sires among the half brothers (+1,722 kg milk, +0.12 % fat, +0.02 % protein). Typically for a Gymnast son, he also has a very good RZE of 130 (feet and legs 115, udder 130). He is one of the few Gymnast sons with medium stature. RZRobot 129 is something special too due to somewhat longer teats (113) optimally placed (116 in the fore, 98 in the rear). The Balisto x Numero Uno dam of Genialo descends from the Rudy Missy family and has 3 more sons in the top list.

Gigastar, new on No.29, also has 3 half and full brothers in the top list. The successful dam behind this is a Danish Silver daughter out of Massey x Limbo. As typical Gymnast son, Gigastar breeds very tall daughters (132) with excellent udders (133, teat length 114) and overall conformation (RZE 133, feet and legs 120). Gigastar stands out positively for metabolism persistency among the new health breeding values (META 118). The new Napoleon (No.39) belongs to the absolute top for conformation with RZE 138, even among the Gymnast sons (stature 129, feet and legs 126, udder 132). Regarding milk yield he is a little lower than most of his half brothers, but high for components (+996 kg milk, +0.39 % fat, +0.14 % protein). Napoleon descends from a French cow family (dam: Jeiraki x Numero Uno x Atwood).

There are the first 6 sons in the top list of the Italian sire of sons Gordon (Battlecry x Embassy). All of them are rather low for conformation, but strong for functionality and health. Galen (No.40, dam: Silver x Predestine) literally spells “health”: RZudderfit 116 (RZS 123), RZhoof 114, RZrepro 117 (RZR 122), RZmetabol 119 and RZhealth 120 (RZN 133)! The production breeding values have a focus on components (+678 kg milk, +0.41 % fat, +0.23 % protein, RZM 139) and the linear does not show any extremes (feet and legs 117, udder 114, RZE 118).

There is not only the Top-10 bull Guardian among the first three Guarantee (Boastful x Tango) sons, but also Grateful on No.17 (dam: Montross x Dean). He is a production sire (+1,539 kg milk, +0.09 % fat, +0.14 % protein, RZM 149) with good longevity (RZN 126) and health (GES 116) who can also be recommended for farms using automatic milking systems (RZRobot 122). Within RZE 121 he reaches feet and legs 108 and udder 120.

Malinus (Modeco x Balisto) is not only one of the most popular genomic bulls having 15,000 progeny (RZM 142, RZE 134), but also brings four sons now. The highest ranking is Monelli on No.70 (dam: Silver x Shotglass). His enormous milk yield transmission (+2,292 kg milk, -0.32 % fat, -0.01 % protein, RZM 149) may come from his dam, a VG 85 Silver daughter out of Shotglass with 12,446 kg milk in the first lactation. Monelli combines this high production with very good udders (125, rear udder height 134, feet and legs 117, RZE 126) and metabolism persistency (META 113). The other three Malinus sons all come from a mating with a Battlecry daughter. So is Mascarell (new on No.225). Having RZM 137 (+1,231 kg milk, +0.06 % fat, +0.09 % protein) combined with RZE 122 (feet and legs 120, udder 120) would not be worth mentioning further, but with RZRobot 131 he is a very good choice for farms with automatic milking systems. Moreover he offers the desired combination of below average stature (96) with good strength (102).

Garett is the so far only Garick (Madron x Robust) son and new on No.27. He is a maternal half brother of Guardian on No.7 (dam: AltaSpring x MPV). Garett is an all-rounder with RZM 142 (+1,890 kg milk, -0.20 % fat, -0.02 % protein), RZE 122 (feet and legs 116, udder 121), RZS 120 (EFit 113), RZR 124 (REP 113) and RZN 127 (GES 117). Teat length should be kept in mind when mating (88).

The first Sonic (Silver x Multiply) son is Saturn (No.31). He comes up to the highest expectations regarding production (RZM 150, +1,537 kg milk, +0.31 % fat, +0.04 % protein) with RZE 129 (feet and legs 125, udder 127). Rear legs are somewhat steeper (80). His dam’s line descends from Converse Judy.

Mezzo is the second Mr Puma (Icone x Balisto) son. His dam is a PowerballP x Snow RF daughter, but neither passed on the polled gene nor the red gene. Mezzo is almost perfect for production (RZM 149, +2,114 kg milk, -0.10 % fat, -0.05 % protein), conformation (RZE 129, feet and legs 111, udder 126), RZS 126 and RZN 122. Daughter fertility should be kept in mind (92). Mezzo promises tall (127) daughters with focus on body.

Both Wunder (No.76) and Chacco (No.84) have the same RZG 152 and are both outstanding for hoof health (KLG 120 and 119) and especially for Mortellaro resistance (DDc 124 and 120). They have really different pedigrees. Wunder is a Windmill (Supershot x Doorman) son out of a Dutch AltaSpring x Chevrolet dam. He has higher production (RZM 140, +1,337 kg milk, +0.01 % fat, +0.11 % protein) with RZE 120 (feet and legs 119, udder 114). Chacco is a Cameron (Penmanship x Yoder) son out of Dozer and the Balisto dam of, amongst others, Genialo and Greatboy. Chacco has RZM 134 (+1,154 kg milk, +0.08 % fat, +0.06 % protein) and RZE 121 (feet and legs 116, udder 119).

Senator (No.124) is the so far only Sound System (Silver x Supersire) son. Having RZM 140 (+1,395 kg milk, +0.26 % fat, -0.05 % protein) and RZE 130 (feet and legs 119, udder 125) he will attract attention as he can also be recommended for robot milking farms (RZRobot 120).

The same is true for Scorpion, new on No.181 with RZM 143 (+1,002 kg milk, +0.32 % fat, +0.19 % protein) and RZE 129 (feet and legs 110, udder 127) as well as RZRobot 120. Scorpion is the first Scuttle (Wilder x Supersire) son out of Bandares x Kingboy and a maternal half brother of the Guarantee son Goldengate (No.72, RZM 139, RZE 117) who is new, too.

17 bulls in the Top-250 are polled now, 4 of them homozygous. Besides the new Top-10 bull Simon P there are more interesting new polled sires. Like Simon P Sierra P (No.235) is heterozygous polled. Having RZE 130 (feet and legs 115, udder 133) he is – together with Hotspot P (No.45, RZM 146, RZE 130) – the highest polled bull for conformation. Sierra P does not have to hide for production with RZM 137 (1,023 kg milk, +0.10 % fat, +0.16 % protein). RZRobot 123 makes the Simba (Silber x Boss) son interesting as well. The polled gene comes via the Dutch dam (Milford-P x Balisto). Especially the RZmetabol (116) stands out among the new health breeding values.

The three new homozygous polled bulls with RZG 148 and 147 are especially interesting. Barman PP (No.169) and Basis PP (No.212) are almost full brothers. Their sire Batch P (Battlecry x Rocky) himself is still in service (RZM 129, RZE 119). The dams are full sisters of Araxis out of Style P. The breeding value profiles of Barmann PP and Basis PP is quite similar with medium milk yield (+828 kg milk and 593 kg) and high fat percentages (+0.28 % and +0.48 % with +0.09 % and +0.08 % protein) as well as RZM 132 and 130. Both should breed daughters recommended for robot milking (RZRobot 126, and 132) with low cell score and longer teats. Barman PP is the somewhat better bull for longevity (RZN 136, GES 115 compared to RZN 129/GES 114) while Basis PP offers more attractive conformation figures (RZE 121, feet and legs 122, udder 118) even though Barman PP (RZE 119, feet and legs 114, udder 117) transmits clearly more stature (120 compared to 102).

Melle PP (No.175) is a Mission P son out of PowerballP and has the highest production among the homozygous polled bulls with RZM 144 (1,890 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, -0.03 % protein). The linear is faultless (RZE 113, feet and legs 103, udder 120) and Melle P can also be used on heifers (RZKd 108, RZKm 125).

Red Holstein

The Red Holstein Top-50 includes 11 new bulls whereas Pace Red has 6 new sons and all other sires only have one new son each. With that Pace Red as a sire of sons closes the gap on Styx Red concerning the most sons in the top list: both have 11 sons each. The absolute top is still defeated by one of the 6 Salvatore (Supershot x Sympatico) sons, Solitair P. He does not care about the system changes and he is ahead by 2 points and RZG 162 (RZM 150, +1,957 kg milk, -0.04 % fat, -0.01 % protein). The nice linear results in RZE 125 (feet and legs 117, udder 125). However, only rump slope (87) has to be kept in mind when mating. The high RZN 133 is now confirmed by a relevant health breeding value (GES 113) based on especially udder health (EFit 112) and metabolism persistency (META 112). The polled gene comes from the dam (Balisto x Magna P). He can also be used on heifers (RZKd 119, RZKm 110).

Solitair P

Moreover, Salvatore has two more sons in Top-10, Spark Red (No.3) and Stanford P (No.10). Spark Red (dam: Debutant x Brewmaster) wins for RZS (124, +9) and RZM (147, +3, +2,272 kg milk, -0.29 % fat, -0.11 % protein, RZM 147). Having RZE 131 (feet and legs 129, udder 125) it should be kept in mind that he tends to transmit steeper rear legs (81). Stanford P is also one of the winners for RZM (151, +7, +2,313 kg milk, -0.25 % fat, -0.08 % protein) and RZE (124, +6, feet and legs 108, udder 129, teat length 117) and ranks in the Top-10 for the first time. His dam is Naemi VG 87 (s. PowerballP), a daughter of Nafidji VG 87, who already has several highly positive, daughter proven sons like, amongst others, Red Power in the Top-10. Stanford P can also be recommended for use on heifers (RZKd 114, RZKm 115).

The highest new bull is on No.4, Palace. The Pace Red (Pad Red x Numero Uno) son reaches RZG 155 thanks to the combination of lots of production (RZM 145, +1,565 kg milk, -0.03 % fat, +0.09 % protein) and high longevity (RZN 130). The linear of Palace (dam: Board x Brekem) presents itself better than RZE 115 (feet and legs 108, udder 112) may suggest. He should breed tall daughters with lots of capacity.

The second newcomer in the Top-10 after Palace is Paladin on No.7. Both are closely related and not only because both are Pace Red sons, but also have the same grand dam Wilder K 25, a Brekem sister of Kanu P. Paladin’s dam, a Battlecry daughter, is especially successful as a bull dam because she has 3 more sons in the top list: The full brothers of Paladin, Pasco Red (No.19, RZM 142, RZE 120) and Pantheon (No.33, RZM 126, RZE 135) as well as Kontra, new on No.29 (mentioned below). Paladin excels with almost perfect figures for all functional traits (RZS 125, EFit 121, RZN 130, GES 122, RZRobot 121) with lots of production and neutral components (RZM 143, +1,678 kg milk, +0.04 % fat, -0.05 % protein). The so-so conformation (RZE 114, feet and legs 116, udder 113, rump slope 80) may get in the way of a widespread use.

His new Silky (Sven P x Kanu P) half brother Kontra (No.29) is a lot more convincing here having RZE 136 (feet and legs 127, udder 130) so that somewhat lower milk production (RZM 136, +1,294 kg milk, +0.15 % fat, -0.04 % protein) can be coped with easily. Kontra also excels for functionality (RZS 123, RZN 123).

Andy-Red (Anreli x Rocky) on No.5 is pretty stable (base shifts, RZM 151, +1,310 kg milk, +0.38 % fat, +0.18 % protein). The linear of Andy-Red does not show any weaknesses with RZE 117 (feet and legs 116, udder 113).

Gonzales (No.6) belongs to the winners, especially for RZM (148, +5). The Great (Go Now RF x Morris) son is a components sire (+0.36 % fat, +0.32 % protein, +985 kg milk). His dam Saigon GP 84 (Brekem x Alchemy) – born in Germany, but sold to Denmark – out of the Canadian Splendors is represented by 3 more sons of different sires in the top list. Even though Gonzales should breed tall cows (118, RZE 120, feet and legs 111, udder 122) his progeny are born easily (RZKd 114). The new health breeding values show good Mastitis resistance (EFit 120, RZS 117).

Nobel Red goes up by 5 RZG points (base shift) to 153 and climbs from No.29 to No.8. The Nova Star (Peul x Passe) son out of Whatsapp from the Qualsiasi family has a good breeding value profile with RZM 133 (+1,403 kg milk, -0.19 % fat, +0.00 % protein), RZE 124 (feet and legs 121, udder 128), RZS 127, RZN 133 and RZR 118.

Among the 11 Styx Red (Entitle x Sympatico) sons in the top list, only one ranks in the Top-10, Stern Red (No.9). Characteristic of Styx he is strong for conformation (RZE 130, feet and legs 133, udder 124) with medium body (stature 101) and adequate production (RZM 138, +1,230 kg milk, +0.22 % fat, +0.02 % protein).

More new, red bulls

Among the further new Pace Red sons Polarstern (dam: Battlecry x Jacey) ranks higher (No.16), but his market potential may be limited with udder 105 (feet and legs 117, RZE 113) despite RZR 129 and RZhealth 114. His half brother Padrono (new on No.45) does better here. He combines highest milk production (RZM 140, +2,008 kg milk, -0.31 % fat, -0.10 % protein), good conformation (RZE 124, feet and legs 109, udder 128) and good calving traits (RZKd 113, RZKm 118). Padrono (dam: Payback x AltaOak) is especially highly positive for direct hoof health (KLG 117) and Mortellaro resistance (DDc 118). It should be kept in mind that he tends to transmit shorter teats (87).

A late new Styx Red son is Sneaker (No.27). He was raised out of a Dutch Missouri daughter (x Ladd P) with a production of 11,320 kg in the first lactation so that he has got everything to breed trouble-free progeny due to an interesting pedigree, RZE 130 (feet and legs 124, udder 129), RZS 127 (EFit 113), RZR 117 (REP 115), RZRobot 122 and RZN 126 (GES 118). In addition, he is excellent for calving ease both direct (RZKd 123) and also among his daughters (RZKm 118). He is also high for milk production (+1,718 kg milk), but low fat percentages have to be kept in mind when mating (-0.42 % fat, -0.13 % protein, RZM 129).

Among Red Holstein, there is more on offer regarding polled bulls, especially because of the two homozygous polled bulls Broker PP (No.23) and Acryl PP (No.46). Broker PP is the first Born P (Battlecry x Perfect Aiko) son out of a German Blue P daughter out of Sympatico and descends from the Roxy family on the dam’s side. Broker PP would be really interesting even without the double polled gene having RZM 144 (+1,689 kg milk, +0.08 % fat, -0.05 % protein) and RZE 120 (feet and legs 114, udder 121, teat length 118). So he may become one of the hottest Red Holstein bulls.

Having the same RZM 144 Acryl PP transmits somewhat lower milk yield, but higher components (+1,404 kg milk, +0.24 % fat, +0.03 % protein). Acryl PP is the first son of the very frequently used Abi Red PP (Apoll P x Balisto) and decends from a full sister of the dam of Polarstern (Battlecry x Jayey) on the dam’s side. The linear of Acryl PP looks better than RZE 115 (feet and legs 103, udder 114) may suggest. Teat length (90) should be kept in mind when mating.
