Quiet August proof run 2019

Compared to many changes in April – amongst others new RZM formula and health breeding values for the first time – the recent August proof run is very constant. The first official breeding values for calf fitness, RZcalfhealth, are new in August. Rocky leads the Holstein top list followed by the highest newcomer and Missouri son Milton. Among Red Holstein the top duo Step Red and Apoll P are unchanged compared to April. The highest newcomer is the Go Now RF son Great on No.3.

News proof run 08-2019

Holstein

He was the highest newcomer in April, Rocky, a son of the Dutch Shamrock son of the same name. Now he leads the top by 3 RZG points more to 149. Unfortunately, Rocky already passed away and there is no semen available.

The highest newcomer is the Missouri son Milton on No.2 with RZM 148 (+2,178 kg milk, -0.17 % fat, -0.06 % protein), RZE 126 (feet and legs 110, udder 131) as well as RZS 106, RZN 110 and RZR 89. However, he only has 16 early daughters considered in the milk production estimation and 17 daughters classified. His figures are clearly influenced by genomic information and further development remains to be seen.

The full brothers and Mogul sons Masato and Morgan (dam: Man-O-Man x Goldwyn) are changing positions this time. Masato still ranks on No.3 with unchanged RZG 147 (RZM 143, RZE 124, feet and legs 124, udder 123). Morgan loses 2 RZG points and is now on No.5, closely behind his full brother (RZM 142, RZE 106, feet and legs 105, udder 106). Masato is definitely the stronger one for conformation while Morgan scores with calving ease (RZKd 112) and health (RZhealth 113). What they have in common is average stature.

Balbo was the highest newcomer among the Balisto sons in April. Due to wins for production (RZM 138, +2), conformation (RZE 118, +3, feet and legs 110, udder 117) and cell score (RZS 121, +2) he is No.1 among all 45 daughter proven Balisto sons to date with doubled daughters (257). Regarding production transmission Balbo (dam: Bookem x Titanic) is a typical Balisto son strong for components with +859 kg milk with +0.46 % fat and +0.10 % protein. Balbo can also be used on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 119).

Balbo

Blacklist (No.8, dam: Garret x Shottle) is a positive exception regarding Mortellaro resistance among the Balisto sons having DDcontrol 108 (RZhealth 113). He is also strong for the new breeding value RZcalfhealth (114). Blacklist entered in April with just average conformation figures based on only 25 classified daughters. 239 daughters out of 662 are classified now and he clearly wins: RZE 117 (+9, feet and legs 121, udder 108). One of a kind is the combination of wider placed rear teats (76) with good teat placement in the fore at the same time (106) and somewhat longer teats (114). He also increases other traits as well (RZM 134, RZS 126, RZN 132, RZR 98) so that he can be used frequently.

Mattis (Massey x Man-O-Man) increases clearly for production (RZM 149, +5, 1,017 daughters) and goes from No.10 to No.7. Conformation is still not good enough for better second crop with RZE 99 (feet and legs 90, udder 108).

Shaw son Sinclair – like most of the 13 daughter proven half brothers – has been unnoticed so far. This changed now, more than one year after his debut, due to daughters in second lactation. He goes up for production by 5 points to RZM 135 (+1,350 kg milk, +0.06 % fat, -0.01 % protein) and for longevity by even 9 points to RZN 117. Having +7 RZG points he is one of the highest winners and ranks in the Top-10 on No.9 now. The mating of the dam Sambuca VG 86 (Beacon x Goldwyn) with Shaw was obviously a lucky strike because she has 3 of the 5 best Shaw sons with the full brothers Sir Henry (No.98) and Sonar (No.138). Being 12 points ahead of all half brothers Sinclair is a league by himself. Besides production and longevity he especially offers rock solid conformation with RZE 118 and feet and legs 114 as well as udder 122. Stature 88 would not have been a plus in the past. Nowadays many commercial farms are especially looking for this: the combination of strength 118 and BCS 121.

Sinclair

Mocon (No.10, DS: Snowman) is the only daughter proven Morgan son in Germany and is able to enter the Top-10 again due to more production (RZM 139, +2). Having unchanged RZE 99 (feet and legs 101, udder 105) may not be advantageous for further use despite calving ease (RZKd 112) and good health (RZhealth 115).

More new bulls

Regarding total merit index Supershot does a great job as a sire of sons. All of the first 4 daughter proven sons rank in the top list, 3 of them in the Top-15. Top-10 bull BG Niels is followed by the full brothers Spiro (No.11) and Stronghold (No.14). Their dam is the Danish Bynke daughter Myself VG 87 from the successful barn Anderstrup. When looking at the further sire line-up there are Planet, Shottle and Lancelot. Myself was used as a bull dam several times and the success of her two oldest sons gives us hope for more of Missouri and Icone. The two full brothers have very similar main breeding values with lots of production, very good udder health and high longevity as well as RZhealth. Spiro who was very frequently used as a genomic sire should transmit somewhat more milk yield (+1,855 kg milk, -0.40 % fat, -0.06 % protein, RZM 134) while Stronghold is more balanced for components (+1,506 kg milk, -0.07 % fat, -0.01 % protein, RZM 136). Both of them have average conformation, even though it is faultless: Spiro RZE 108 (feet and legs 105, udder 110) and Stronghold RZE 106 (feet and legs 104, udder 102). Having only 27 and 23 classified daughters respectively further development remains to be seen.

The so far best Supershot son for conformation is the new Sandor on No.141 (dam: Epic x Massey) with RZE 114 (feet and legs 102, udder 125). Having less milk (+524 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, +0.14 % protein, 144 daughters) than his half brothers he also excels with udder health (EFit 115) and longevity (RZN 121) as well as calving ease (RZKd 108), milkability (RZD 110) and calm temperament (MVH 116).

Balisto is still the dominating sire of the top bulls with 31 sons in Top-250, 7 of them are new. Bonum (new on No.18) was one of the most frequently used genomic bulls, also due to his maternal pedigree: Epic x Garrett x Bolton x full sister of Shottle. Having RZE 126 (feet and legs 111, udder 123, 56 classified daughters) he is the third best Balisto son for conformation. His breeding value profile (RZM 138, RZS 110, RZN 121, RZR 88) matches really well with his last genomic figures. Based on 104 daughters Bonum offers more milk production than most of his half brothers (+1,223 kg milk, -0.06 % fat, +0.16 % protein). Moreover, calves are easily born (RZKd 110, 9,343 calvings), his daughters are suitable for robot milking (RZRobot 119) and he also excels with calf fitness (RZcalfhealth 110).

If you are looking for a Balisto son transmitting high stature (127) and body, you should choose Barly (No.87, dam: Epic x Baltimor, RZE 117, feet and legs 104, udder 114). He also offers calving ease (RZKd 118), milkability (RZD 113), calm temperament (MVH 112) and suitability for robot milking (RZRobot 118).

One of the most balanced bulls is Bermuda (No.20, Balisto x Mayfield x Man-O-Man). Having 1,500 daughters now, his breeding values are unchanged. He wins for the health breeding values and also has a good breeding value for calf fitness (111).

A balanced, new Balisto son is Basement (No.113, DS: Snowman) out of the Rudy Missy family (RZM 130, RZE 120, feet and legs 122, udder 112, RZRobot 112) who belongs to the best 10 % of the top bulls regarding the new published breeding value for calf fitness (117).

Bagno RDC (new on No.196) is the first daughter proven red carrier Balisto son (dam: Epic x Shottle x September RDC). His production figures are based on 70 daughters (RZM 122, +619 kg milk, +0.06 % fat, +0.10 % protein), but further development of conformation remains to be seen (22 daughters, RZE 113, feet and legs 107, udder 118).

Mogul as a sire is on second place regarding top bulls in the list (18). It seems like that his sons follow in his footsteps now. Two of the first three Commander (Mogul x Observer) sons make it in the Top-25. Calvo (No.21) is not only the highest ranking, but has also highest second crop chances (dam: Epic x Atwood Gypsy EX 92) with RZE 127 (feet and legs 116, udder 122). Not only conformation is great, but also production with +1,355 kg milk, +0.11 % fat and -0.05 % protein (RZM 135, 78 daughters). Come On (new on No.25, dam: Lexor x Freddie) has a higher RZM with 142 (+800 kg milk, +0.51 % fat and +0.19 % protein). For conformation (RZE 107, udder 110), especially feet and legs here (91), he is too low for wide spread use.

32 sons of Boss (No.55) entered service. Only 5 of them did better than their sire regarding RZG. Bravos (No.22, Boss x Freddie x Shottle) succeeds here with RZG 141. Bravos offers medium milk production with high components. When looking at his very good health breeding values, it is no surprise that he clearly goes up for RZN (RZN 128) and also wins +4 RZG points.

Phoenix (new on No.69, DS: Mogul) is the first daughter proven President (Numero Uno x Million) son. His linear seems to be more positive than RZE 117 shows (feet and legs 108, udder 115). His strengths are production (+1,670 kg milk, -0.02 % fat, -0.13 % protein, RZM 135) while udder health and daughter fertility are average. He should not be used on heifers (RZKd 85).

With Mardi Gras, another Mogul puts his first sons on the market. Maki (DS: Snowman) with RZM 125 (+940 kg milk, +0.08 % fat and -0.01 % protein) and RZE 125 (feet and legs 110, udder 123) ranks on No.139 in the top list. Maki is also interesting as he is a red carrier thanks to MGDS Baxter 2. However, further development remains to be seen with just 45 early daughters, 19 of them are classified.

The debut of Delano will attract interest (No.226). He is the highest of all Top-250 bulls for overall conformation with RZE 135, especially because of the outstanding udders. Regarding udders (148) he is 13 points ahead of the next bull. Besides excellent udders the so far 42 classified Delano daughters are characterized by enormous stature (135), medium depth and strength. Feet and legs are solid and unremarkable (108). The extremely highly attached and nicely shaped rear udders show normal teat placement, good milkability (RZD 106) and very good udder health (RZS 120, EFit 112). Milk production is pretty high (+1,034 kg milk) with somewhat lower components (-0.24 % fat, -0.22 % protein, RZM 110). His daughter proven breeding values are almost identical with the last pure genomic figures. Delano‘s dam is a GP 82 classified McCutchen of De-Su and, without genomics, would have probably not been able to produce such a remarkable conformation sire.

Polled

The Top-250 includes seven heterozygous and one homozygous polled bull in the meantime. Two of them are newcomers. Benares P (No.160) is a Balisto son out of Cameron x Destry x Lawn Boy. With RZE 124 (feet and legs 111, udder 117, 61 daughters) he is the best conformation sire among the polled top bulls. The production breeding values are balanced (RZM 119, +487 kg milk, +0.08 % fat and +0.09 % protein, 96 daughters) and he promises lots of longevity (RZN 125). Benares P can also be recommended for farms using automatic milking systems (RZRobot 124).

Stoke P (new on No.214, Style P x Epic) offers more milk yield with RZM 123 (+1,010 kg milk, +0.08 % fat and -0.10 % protein), but a very mixed linear (RZE 102, feet and legs 99, udder 110).

Marker P does better here with RZG 126 slightly ranking outside the Top-250 with RZE 118 (feet and legs 101, udder 125) and average values for all body traits. Having RZM 114 (+601 kg milk, +0.05 % fat and -0.06 % protein, 128 daughters) especially hoof health (RZhoof 115, DDcontrol 114) and daughter fertility (RZR 125, RZrepro 112) speak in favor of this Mardi Gras son out of Ladd P.

Red Holstein

Among Red Holstein there are 8 new bulls in the Top-50, but the number of new bulls is limited. The ranking of the highest six sires of April is unchanged despite partly higher numbers of daughters. Among them are two newcomers.

Step Red (Sympatico x Observer) remains on the top and goes up by +5 RZG points to 152 with quadrupled number of daughters (264 daughters). Having +2,859 kg milk he remains the highest milk yield sire (-0.58 % fat, -0.26 % protein, RZM 146). He can compensate some of the losses from April regarding conformation (RZE 114, feet and legs 100, udder 117).

Full brother Sunny Red (No.5) goes up slightly for conformation with still increasing number of daughters (956 now, RZN 125, +4), but he loses one RZG point (RZM 129, RZE 130, feet and legs 117, udder 132), especially because of worse daughter fertility (RZR 89). He clearly wins for his former weakness Mortellaro resistance (DDc 98, +11).

Apoll P (RZM 149, RZE 114, feet and legs 98, udder 114) is still on No.2 having his well-known, outstanding milk production (+2,549 kg milk, -0.44 % fat, -0.13 % protein, 2,240 daughters) and milkability (RZD 77) which has to be kept in mind. He belongs to the best bulls for the new breeding value calf fitness (RZcalfhealth 112).

The highest newcomer is on No.3, Great (Go Now RF x Morris x Ruleto). With RZM 158 he is the undisputable No.1 here (+1,922 kg milk, +0.02 % fat, +0.15 % protein, 48 daughters) and is able to even outperform his genomic figures that are high anyway. Conformation transmission (RZE 104, feet and legs 118, udder 90) and daughter fertility (RZR 77) are not that positive.

Great

Present (Perfect Aiko x Logan), the positive surprise of April, not only confirms his production and conformation figures with an increase of his daughters from 41 to 160, but also improves slightly (RZM 148, +1,361 kg milk, +0.37 % fat, +0.07 % protein; RZE 118, feet and legs 115, udder 113) and ranks on No.4. With medium body characteristics Present is the best bull for Mortellaro resistance now (DDc 124).

Fireman (No.6, Fageno x Snowman) who was very heavily used as a genomic bull already has 2,584 daughters included in his production breeding values. The increase of 3 RZM points to 142 is due to his daughters in second lactation now (+1,973 kg milk, -0.01 % fat, -0.20 % protein). He slightly loses for conformation (RZE 105, feet and legs 98, udder 105). The very calm temperament (MVH 124) and vitality of the young animals (RZcalfhealth 114) are his strengths.

Fireman

He is followed, as in April, by the extreme fat sire Red Power (No.7, Perfect Aiko x Fidji, CD positive) with +13 kg milk, +0.87 % fat and +0.40 % protein (RZM 133, 263 daughters). His conformation profile remains constant (RZE 117, feet and legs 117, udder 106), just as his outstanding figures for calving ease (RZKd 129) and good Mortellaro resistance (DDc 116).

The second highest newcomer is on No.8, Defago Red. This Fageno son out of Destry x Shottle already has his second daughter proven production breeding value, based on 160 daughters now (RZM 132, +706 kg milk, +0.36 % fat, +0.12 % protein). He did not have much daughters sufficiently classified in April, but confirms his genomic RZE now based on 65 daughters (115, feet and legs 97, udder 122). Defago Red should breed framy (125), very calm daughters (MVH 121) with sloped rumps.

Having daughters in second lactation now Effort (Ellmau x Snowman) enters the Top-10 on No.9 again (RZM 118, +6; +1,159 kg milk, -0.34 % fat, -0.11 % protein). With RZE 132 (feet and legs 120, udder 131) he is the highest conformation sire in the Top-10 and also excellent for somatic cell count with RZS 130. Milkability (RZD 77) and Mortellaro resistance (89) should be kept in mind when mating. In contrast, calf fitness is very good (113).

More newcomers

The third highest newcomer is Action on No.15 who almost transmits +1 % fat (RZM 135, +92 kg milk, +0.96 % fat, +0.34 % protein). The Aikman son may not have high chances due to RZE 94 (feet and legs 99, udder 94), also even if they are based on 15 classified daughters.

Go West does better here (new on No.19). Having RZE 109 (feet and legs 108, udder 102) based on just 12 classified daughters the further development of the Go Now RF son out of Detroit remains to be seen. Having almost the same RZM 134 like Action the breeding values could not be more different (+1,718 kg milk, -0.35 % fat, -0.07 % protein, 47 daughters).

He is followed by the new Laser PP on No.20. The Label P son out of the Ladd P sister of Kanu P was already very frequently used as a genomic bull and also would have to offer way more if he wasn’t polled: RZM 123 (+618 kg milk, +0.02 % fat, +0.14 % protein), RZE 118 (feet and legs 117, udder 111), RZS 116 (RZudderfit 112) and RZN 120. As those figures have to be considered carefully based on just 45 daughters (22 classified) he is by far the highest homozygous polled Red Holstein sire.

As Defago Red the new Francis (No.26) is out of Fageno x Destry x Shottle with extreme fat transmission and out of a well-known Dutch cow family. However, those two are not related on the maternal side. Defago Red is out of the Froukjes while Francis is out of the Massia family. Francis combines +0.71 % fat and +0.27 % protein with slightly negative milk yield (-244 kg milk, RZM 117, 189 daughters) and outstanding udders (129, feet and legs 110, RZE 121). Having medium body characteristics he transmits good health (RZhealth 113, RZN 126) and calf fitness (KFit 116).

Further development

The oldest Brekem son is still the highest (RZG 130) and actually one of the strongest Red Holstein bulls for conformation (RZE 128). Brekan (No.28, out of Detroit x Ralstorm) also offers high components and good figures for longevity, fertility and maternal calving ease.
