Breeding value estimation of daughter proven bulls in December 2018

The Holstein Top-10 is completely new with 7 new bulls, 3 of 14 new Balisto sons are among them. Apoll P still leads the Red Holsteins, but the highest new Sympatico son Step Red is closely behind him.

He was the highest newcomer in August and becomes leader now with RZG 153, Harvey. Based on still just 54 daughters, the Hunter son from a Dutch Super daughter reaches RZM 151 (+5) with 2,260 kg milk now. Within the conformation that has its focus on body, he cannot completely keep his figures (RZE 110, -2, feet and legs 113, udder 100).

The highest of 14 new Balisto sons is on No.2, Barcley. On the dam’s side, he descends via Epic and a full sister of Hunter (Man-O-Man x Shottle) from the Dellia family. Barcley reaches RZM 149 due to high components (+0.29 % fat, +0.45 % protein) with 717 kg milk. However, these figures are based on just 24 daughters in the beginning of the first lactation. Conformation already includes 46 daughters resulting in RZE 124 and, therefore, better than when he was pure genomic. Barcley‘s strengths are in feet and legs (126). Udders are solid (111). Having teat length 132 he can be used to improve short teats. The amount of daughters will increase significantly in the next proof runs because Barcley already was very popular as genomic bull. So his direct calving breeding values (RZKd 110, RZKm 113) are based on more than 6,000 calves born.


Due to an improvement for RZN (126, +6) with daughters in second lactation Morgan is on No.3 now and the highest ranking Mogul son. He remains constant for the other breeding values with 227 daughters now (RZM 141, +0.42 % fat, +0.10 % protein, RZE 109, feet and legs 107, udder 108). This is also true for the very good direct (RZKd 112) and daughter calving traits (RZKm 114).

The second Mogul son in the Top-10 is his full brother Masato on No.6. Their dam is KAX Debita VG 89 (Man-O-Man x Goldwyn). The have similar production transmission (RZM 140, +0.23 % fat, +0.07 % protein), cell score (111) and daughter fertility (RZR 110/112), but basically they are different. Masato is clearly better than Morgan regarding conformation with RZE 125 (feet and legs 124, udder 124), but does not have that good longevity with RZN 104 (584 daughters).

There are three more new Balisto sons on No.4, No.5 and No.7. Basical (No.4) descends via Epic, Man-O-Man and Duplex from the full sister of Jannsen and Jackpot (Jocko Besne x Mandel). His figures (RZM 140, RZE 119, feet and legs 116, udder 111) have to be taken with a pinch of salt because of just 21 early daughters, especially for longevity (RZN 131). Should these be confirmed though he would probably be the first choice for farms with automatic milking systems due to RZRobot 133, really nice teat placement and milkability RZD 121.

In contrast, the figures of Baltikum (No.5) are solid with 255 daughters in milk, 130 of them are classified. He is a Balisto son strong for components (+1,000 kg milk, +0.42 % fat, +0.21 % protein, RZM 144) that was already used very frequently as genomic bull as well. For conformation he does well for all complexes with RZE 123 (feet and legs 113, udder 113), but may breed too tall daughters with 133. Baltikum is a maternal half brother of the former genomic star Cinema, i.e. out of the famous Danish bull dam Heaven (Snowman x Shottle).

Bartoli (No.7) is also very promising with RZM 130 (+1,079 kg milk, -0.26 % fat, +0.12 % protein), RZE 119 (feet and legs 111, udder 125), RZFit 135 and RZRobot 126. However, his figures are just based on 39 daughters in milk, 20 of them are classified. Bartoli descends from a Dutch Hunter x Bolton including the Roxy cow family.

Chic, new on No.8, is above the genomic level with his first daughter proven figures. Based on 25 daughters he reaches +1,747 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, -0.06 % protein (RZM 137). For conformation (36 daughters) his linear is without any extremes (feet and legs 117, udder 112, RZE 114). The Chevrolet son descends from an Epic sister of Boss, i.e. the grand dam is the famous KNS Rendevous (s. Man-O-Man).

Janitor on No.9 is also new having just a few daughters (34). He also has an Epic x Man-O-Man dam, but with origin in the Canadian Splendor family. The Jackman son has RZM 147 (+1,352 kg milk, +0.13 % fat, +0.18 % protein) and RZE 112 (feet and legs 110, udder 108, 24 daughters). His daughter calving traits should be kept in mind (RZKm 84). A Toprock half brother, Totilas, is new and ranks on No.208 with RZM 114 and RZE 113.

The seventh newcomer in the Top-10 is Bondial (No.10), the highest of 8 new Boss sons. His strengths are in production transmission (+1,529 kg milk, +0.04 % fat, +0.13 % protein, RZM 146) where he is clearly above his last genomic values. Having 36 daughters so far (24 classified) the figures can still change clearly. With RZE 116 he has strengths for feet and legs, but is just average for udder with 102. This is also true for udder health (RZS 97).


More new bulls

The massive use of Balisto as a sire of sons should have been worth it because the 10 new further daughter proven sons all rank in the Top-101. One of the most frequently used genomic bulls is outside the Top-10 on No.12, Balu (dam: Epic x Goldwyn). So the fact that he can be used on heifers (RZKd 111) is based on already 32,000 calvings. He does not disappoint regarding production transmission (+1,157 kg milk, -0.05 % fat, +0.17 % protein, RZM 139, 100 daughters). For conformation, he is below (the genomic) expectations with RZE 107 (feet and legs 111, udder 103, 98 daughters). In return he is strong for longevity (RZN 128) and his daughters can be used on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 118).

Bermuda (new on No.31) descends from Mayfield x Man-O-Man from the famous O family – known for polled breeding – at Hickorymea. He is not polled though. Based on 131 daughters he confirms his genomic figures with RZM 136 (+790 kg milk, +0.21 % fat, +0.22 % protein) and RZE 122 (feet and legs 112, udder 119). He can be used on heifers, too (RZKd 111, RZKm 109).

Brentano (dam: Sudan x Xacobeo) is new and follows him on No.35. He is definitely strong for udder health (RZS 123), daughter calving traits (RZKm 120), milkability (RZD 115) and longevity (RZN 130) resulting in RZFit 136. The 37 Brentano daughters so far do not stand out for milk yield (+139 kg), but for components (+0.40 % fat, +0.27 % protein, RZM 124).

Barey, new on No.44, has an attractive breeding value profile with RZM 125 (+440 kg milk, +0.07 % fat, +0.22 % protein, 75 daughters), RZE 122 (feet and legs 114, udder 117, 21 daughters), RZS 113 and RZN 133. His dam is a Robust x Sanchez imported from the USA as an embryo.

Belsan (No.51, RZRobot 133) and Belfast (No.84, RZRobot 126) can be recommended for robot milking farms. Belsan (dam: Shamrock x Man-O-Man) is strong for longevity (RZN 128) with RZM 126 (+690 kg milk, +0.12 % fat, +0.12 % protein, 55 daughters) and RZE 112 (feet and legs 108, udder 114, 16 daughters) while Belfast (dam: Gold Chip x Hayden) is better for conformation (RZE 121, feet and legs 119, udder 114, 78 daughters) and an absolute calving ease bull (RZKd 125, RZKm 114). Regarding production transmission, Belfast is similar like Belsan +802 kg milk, +0.08 % fat, +0.13 % protein and RZM 129.

Sargeant son Sandoz is new on No.45. He offers lots of production (+1,684 kg milk, -0.12 % fat, -0.01 % protein, RZM 138, 45 daughters) and rock-solid conformation (RZE 115, feet and legs 109, udder 113, 31 daughters). His dam is a Hunter x Niagra from the Remarlinda family.

Altona, new on No.55, is the first daughter proven Album (s. Epic) son. Based on 50 daughters he reaches RZM 120 (+1,156 kg milk, -0.19 % fat, -0.09 % protein), RZS 118 and RZN 130. The firmly attached udders stand out in the linear, but teat length (83) should be kept in mind (RZE 119, feet and legs 114, udder 118, 37 daughters). Altona can be used on heifers (RZKd 117, RZKm 118).

Teat length (82) has to be kept in mind as well when mating Ladino, new on No.93. Apart from that he is a very complete bull having RZM 129 (+669 kg milk, +0.27 % fat, +0.14 % protein, 49 daughters) and RZE 126 (feet and legs 111, udder 128, 32 daughters). The pedigree of the Loren son includes Man-O-Man and Encino on the dam’s side.

The data of Bali (No.223, Big Point x Beacon x Goldwyn) is still limited as well with RZM 113, RZE 121 (feet and legs 111, udder 126), RZS 125, RZN 120 as well as RZRobot 134 (34 daughters).


Red carrier and polled

Boss son Budapest on No.30 is a red carrier due to his famous dam Snowmassia (Snowman x Shottle). Moreover, he is interesting because of RZM 128 (+1,485 kg milk, -0.20 % fat, -0.08 % protein), RZE 118 (feet and legs 127, udder 103), RZS 127, RZN 121 and RZKm 120. Having just 23 daughters (17 classified) his further development remains to be seen.


The new Chelsea P (No.82) is a red carrier and polled. Having Chevrolet as sire both has to come from the dam’s side even though this is not obvious directly having Bookem as dam’s sire and Mr.Sam as great grand sire. The maternal great grand sire Polled Plus is responsible. Based on just 24 daughters, Chelsea P reaches RZM 132 (+1,573 kg milk, -0.18 % fat, -0.05 % protein).

You do not have to spend so much time finding the reason why Fashion (No.183) is a red carrier because his sire is the Red & White Fageno. Having Snowmassia as dam he is a maternal half brother of Budapest. Fashion will be one of the winners of the stronger weighting of fat in the RZM with +926 kg milk, +0.24 % fat, -0.10 % protein (RZM 120, 37 daughters, RZE 113, feet and legs 118, udder 105).

Ohio P (new on No.227) is a really good choice for mating with the many polled progeny having Lawn Boy in the pedigree. He is polled due to his sire Ohare and, therefore, he does not have any Lawn Boy blood. On the dam’s side, there are Epic and Man-O-Man. Based on 22 early daughters Ohio P reaches RZM 120 (+1,509 kg milk, -0.25 % fat, -0.21 % protein) as well as RZE 109 (feet and legs 115, udder 110, 16 daughters).


Further development

Bravos was one of the high new Boss sons in August, but only based on 30 daughters. He now goes up by 4 RZG points to 143 with 118 daughters and on No.13. Having stable RZM 135 (+643 kg milk, +0.23 % fat, +0.26 % protein) and RZE 120 (feet and legs 116, udder 116) his improvement is due to improved udder health (RZS 119), daughter fertility (RZR 110) as well as longevity (RZN 112).

Blossom as another new Boss son was offered in August, too.

The improvement by 73 to 462 daughters now has not had a good impact on his production breeding values (RZM 106, -9, +184 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, +0.05 % protein) and he also loses slightly for conformation (RZE 120, feet and legs 121, udder 116).

Big Point is still doing well as a sire of sons whose first 4 daughter proven sons have an average RZG of 134. Bacalao (DS: Beacon, RZG 136, No.62) who entered new in August remains the best for conformation with RZE 123 (feet and legs 130, udder 118) and 104 daughters so far. Regarding the production traits he has +960 kg milk, -0.38 % fat, +0.11 % protein (RZM 125, 276 daughters).

For one of the first Model sons, Malta (dam: Snowman x Shottle), the reliability of the first daughter proven breeding values was somewhat lower in August (23 daughters). Having 96 daughters now he slightly loses milk and longevity (RZN 113), but is still interesting with RZM 128 (+1,193 kg milk, +0.07 % fat, -0.03 % protein) and slightly increased RZE 128 (feet and legs 126, udder 117, No.75). RZFit 134 speaks for him, too.

Another Model son, Midas (No.130, dam: Goldwyn x Duplex), triples his daughters compared to his debut in August to 182 now. Having constant production (RZM 119, +835 kg milk, -0.12 % fat and +0.01 % protein) and conformation figures (RZE 128, feet and legs 134, udder 120) slight gains for udder health (RZS 108, +6) are facing slight losses for RZR (107, -3) and RZN (109, -4). Having direct calving ease RZKd 110 and daughter calving traits RZKm 123 he can definitely be used on heifers.

LetItSnow son LeChiffre (DS: Bookem) was offered new in August. Having 66 daughters to date he still has RZG 131 (No.146) with attractive RZE 130 (feet and legs 113, udder 137) and RZM 122 (+1,120 kg milk, -0.24 % fat and -0.03 % protein).

Despite more than 1,000 daughters and a calculated reliability of 99% the breeding values for milk production can still change if so far only first lactation data of almost all daughters is included. Two examples are the Genesis son Grizzly as well as the Epic son Explizit.

Having daughters in second lactation now the RZM of Grizzly goes up by 3 points to 125 with unchanged RZE 114 and RZR 127. Longevity also increases slightly to RZN 124 so that he reaches No.38 due to RZG 138.

Epic son Explizit (DS: Bronco) goes up by 4 points to RZM 131 with daughters in second lactation (1,892 daughters) with RZE 124 (feet and legs 114, udder 119) as well as constant RZN 112 (No.47 now).

With information from second lactation of the 163 Sukari daughters the Supersire son wins 9 RZN points to 124. Having constant production figures (RZM 132) and slightly improved daughter fertility RZR 110 he is on No.20 now. So he remains the highest Supersire son, especially for conformation where he is even better by 12 points with RZE 126 (feet and legs 112, udder 127) than the next half brother.

Bonapart (Bookem x Bolton) was not used that frequently as genomic bull and has 365 daughters. These, being in second lactation, bring him a slight production plus (RZM 129, +2; RZE 121). With also slightly increased longevity to RZN 112 he is on No.99 now.

Beladi increases his daughters from 3,641 to 4,108. Having information from third lactation he improves by 4 points to RZM 126 and longevity to RZN 127 (RZE 112). With RZR 125 he remains the best Bookem son for daughter fertility and the third best of 43 half brothers with RZG 141 on No.23. Ahead of him are only Big Point (No.22, RZM 132, RZE 118) and Boss (No.14, RZM 134, RZE 115).

Banesto remains the best Bookem son for conformation (RZE 124, RZM 117, RZN 127, No.129) and Bolt RF (RZM 122, RZE 115, No.125) still grants access to Bookem genetics among Red Holstein.

Mercury may not be the strongest for production with RZM 114 among the 41 Mogul sons, but his RZM will get higher in April due to higher weighting of fat, but he has a clear fat focus in his production figures (+434 kg milk, +0.33 % fat, -0.01 % protein). He surely is the best Mogul son for longevity with increased RZN 132 (+6) and 2,684 daughters now (No.80, RZE 121).



Red Holstein

Twelve new daughter proven bulls rank in the Top-50 of the best Red Holsteins, three of them in the Top-10. The top position is maintained by Apoll P with RZG 144 (+4) and 763 daughters. He gains for almost all important fields compared to August (RZM 146, +2; RZE 114, +1; RZS 118, +3). He shows clear wins for RZN to 121 (+6). Apoll P remains a sire of extremes with +2,338 kg milk, but also RZR 84 (+1) or dairy type 134. Biggest weakness is still milkability with RZD 76 even though it improved by 4 points.

The highest newcomer is on No.2, Step Red. He is the slightly younger full brother of Sunny Red who entered new on No.5 in August having just a few daughters. He can defend this rank with 233 daughters now (RZM 127, RZE 126, feet and legs 114, udder 129). The two Sympatico sons are out of an Observer x Goldwyn dam. It remains to be seen if the figures of the new Step Red will be as constant as his brother’s because only 25 early daughters are included now. Having this basis he is not only better than his brother for milk production with +2,625 kg, but also No.1 for milk yield of all Red & White daughter proven bulls (-0.64 % fat, -0.24 % protein, RZM 140).

Snake Red can improve by 4 points to RZM 140 due to many daughters of already 2,620 daughters in second lactation (+1,553 kg milk, -0.19 % fat, +0.07 % protein) and climbs on No.3. Therefore, he remains the highest Snow RF son and will still be in great demand with constant RZE 124 (feet and legs 103, udder 130) because he can be used on heifers (RZKd 117).

The Destry dam of Snake Red proves herself as outstanding bull dam with another son in the Top-10. Her Brekem son Brekan enters new on No.7. Brekan was also used very frequently as genomic bull and confirms this confidence with RZM 121 (+610 kg milk, +0.11 % fat, +0.08 % protein) and RZE 134 (feet and legs 123, udder 131). Based on 44 daughters (23 classified) he has a completely positive breeding value profile (RZFit 142) with a special strength in the daughter calving traits (RZKm 123).


The third newcomer in the Top-10 is Payback on No.4. He is one of 4 new Perfect Aiko sons in the top list. His dam is a Snowman x Shottle from the Dutch Massia family. Payback combines production (+1,409 kg milk, -0.06 % fat, +0.00 % protein, RZM 134) and conformation (RZE 134, feet and legs 111, udder 138) on the highest level. The remaining figures do not show any weaknesses. It is proven that calves of Payback are born easily (RZKd 113) having more than 1,200 registered calvings.

The dam of Fireman (No.6, s. Fageno) is Snowmassia (Snowman x Shottle) and so she is the more famous full sister of the dam of Payback. The Black & White full brother Fashion successfully debuts in the Holstein top list on No.183. Fireman was one of the most frequently used, genomic Red Holstein bulls and his second daughter proven breeding values are based on 225 daughters now (147 classified). Gains for production (RZM 135, +4; +1,838 kg milk, +0.01 % fat, -0.17 % protein) are facing losses for conformation (RZE 111, -4; feet and legs 102, udder 109). The linear is faultless.

Red Power (s. Perfect Aiko) entered new on No.2 in August. Having tripled daughters to 146 now, he cannot completely maintain his figures and loses 3 RZG points to 135 resulting in rank 8. He is even a more extreme components sire now (+0.82 % fat, +0.36 % protein, +81 kg milk, RZM 130) and improves for calving ease (RZKd 129, RZKm 116). Unfortunately he is CD positive.

Red Mist (Elburn x Spencer) goes up slightly and he ranks in the Top-10 again on No.9. He is a reliable protein sire (+0.23 % protein, -0.08 % fat, +895 kg milk, RZM 134) with a somewhat mixed linear (RZE 107, feet and legs 114, udder 99).

Julandy is almost 8 years old and has nearly 3,000 daughters included in the breeding value, but he still can keep up with the younger bulls (RZM 137, RZE 130, feet and legs 119, udder 122, No.10). He can still be recommended for use on robot milking farms, especially due to nicely placed and not too short teats (RZRobot 120).


What else?

Bigstar-Red (No.15) is one of four new Sympatico sons in the top list. Regarding production transmission he almost reaches the same level with 81 daughters as his last purely genomic figures (RZM 118, +1,156 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, -0.17 % protein). The basis for conformation with just 19 daughters is clearly lower: RZE 119 (feet and legs 122, udder 115). However, the expectations for a son from the Apple-Red EX 96 family, via Bookem and Shottle, are surely high.

Another new Sympatico (s. Snowman) son, Symsum-Red (No.25), has a few more daughters for conformation. 46 classified daughters result in RZE 118 (feet and legs 115, udder 118) as well as RZM 128 (+1,546 kg milk, +0.04 % fat, -0.18 % protein, 69 daughters). As the dam of Symsum-Red is a Snowman daughter he is quite closely inbred with this exceptional sire. However, daughter fertility is medium (RZR 99). Having direct calving ease RZKd 127 Symsum-Red can be recommended for use on heifers.

With the combination of RZM 128 (+755 kg milk, +0.17 % fat, +0.13 % protein) and RZE 125 (feet and legs 117, udder 118) the new Aikman son Aximo (No.20) will attract attention. Unfortunately, he is CD positive (dam: Ralstorm x Talent2).

With RZG 130 Kansas P enters new on No.21 (s. Kanu P). He already has 122 daughters (75 classified) and presents himself as extreme milk sire (+1,763 kg milk, -0.60 % fat, -0.26 % protein, RZM 120) with very solid conformation figures (RZE 120, feet and legs 127, udder 114). He transmits an uncommon profile for body: stature (114) with lots of condition (BCS 113) and strength (108) which can be probably explained by the sire line-up in the maternal pedigree, Fidelity x Zabing x Gibor. Kansas P is definitely a somewhat different polled bull here.

Another new Perfect Aiko son does not have the most daughters either, Prosecco (No.41, 35 daughters in milk, 17 classified). Despite having Laron P as dam’s sire, Prosecco is not polled, but CD negative despite the great grand sire Mr.Burns. The first daughter proven figures definitely speak for Prosecco: RZM 123 (+613 kg milk, +0.03 % fat, +0.13 % protein) and RZE 122 (feet and legs 108, udder 120).

Kajak P, new on No.49, is polled and CD negative. The Kanu P son out of Mr.Burns x Lentini RF reaches RZM 119 (+854 kg milk, -0.17 % fat, +0.00 % protein, 50 daughters) and RZE 120 (feet and legs 104, udder 125). Having good milkability (RZD 118) and somewhat longer and not too tight teats as desired, he can also be recommended for use on robot milking farms (RZRobot 119).

The two Perfect Aiko sons and newcomers from August, Petisso and Payball, develop differently. Petisso loses for production (RZM121, -5; +1,346 kg milk, -0.38 % fat, +0.13 % protein, 136 daughters) and wins slightly for conformation (RZE 134, +2; feet and legs 128, udder 118). In contrast, Payball gains for production (RZM 115, +3; +930 kg milk, +0.18 % fat, +0.18 % protein, 176 daughters) and loses for conformation (RZE 123, -5; feet and legs 112, udder 124).

Fageno (No.23, s. Fidji) already has more than 7,000 daughters and the first two daughter proven sons in the top list. He is able to increase his RZM by 3 points to 127 though because most of the daughters add information from the third lactation now – a little better than pre-assessed. He remains constant for conformation (RZE 108, feet and legs 107, udder 100) and can still be recommended as calving ease bull with a reliability of 99% (RZKd 117, RZKm 115).

It can be determined that genomic selection has arrived among the daughter proven bulls now, i.e. resulting in refreshment on the top. On the other hand, it means that the first daughter proven figures have to be interpreted accordingly even if these are already based on many daughters. The actual transmission cannot just be estimated using information from first lactation. This is not only true for longevity, but also for milk production. To reach an actual reliability of 99% at least the information from second lactation is necessary, i.e. of full-grown daughters.
