Genomic newcomers in April 2018
Bestday benefits from the new estimation model for longevity and is No.1 among Holstein now. Most of the new bulls have the sires of sons Superhero and Kerrigan. Among Red Holstein, the new Salvatore son Spark Red climbs the top and the Top-10 is completely new with even 6 new bulls.
The introduction of the new estimation model for longevity as well as changes in daughter fertility and calving traits also impact the genomic breeding values resulting in gRZN changes of +/-8 points.
In contrast, the effects of the annual base shift are comparatively low. The new basis for all breeding values is now all cows with own production born 2012-2014 (so far: 2011-2013). Please visit www.vit.de for more information.
The number of new bulls (62) in the genomic Top-250 is exactly the same as in December. Having 14 newcomers in December, Kerrigan has 7 more newcomers now. There are even more new bulls by Superhero (9).
On top is the already well-known Bestday (Bestboss x Balisto) having the same RZG 161 as in December despite base shift. He goes up by two points for longevity (RZN 127) and one for production which is strong anyway (RZM 155) having RZE 120 (feet and legs 109, udder 122).
The highest newcomer and Superhero (Supershot x Numero Uno) son Hotspot P is on No.2 with RZG 161, too. He is the first polled bull above RZG 160 and was wistfully awaited for in the breeding scene as the owner RUW already used the first doses for mating contracts. Hotspot P combines very high production transmission (RZM 152, +1,085 kg milk, +0.42 % fat, +0.31 % protein) with excellent conformation figures (RZE 130, feet and legs 120, udder 126) as well as high longevity (RZN 125), daughter fertility (RZR 115), daughter calving traits (RZKm 119) and milkability (RZD 121). He got the polled gene from the PowerballP dam that descends via Saloon, Snowman and Goldwyn from the famous EX 94 Outside Kora. If you cannot get semen of Hotspot P or if you do not want to pay that much, chose his full brother Hansa P (No.55, RZM 143, RZE 127, RZN 126).
No.1 from December, Braveness (Bandares x Balisto), is on No.3 now as he lost 5 RZN points to still impressive 132 (RZM 147, RZE 120, feet and legs 104, udder 127).
He is followed by Summerlake (DG Charly x Balisto, RZM 150, RZE 118, feet and legs 114, udder 114) who is unchanged (base shift). His strengths are udder health (RZS 130) and longevity (RZN 131).
Then there comes a DG Charly (Supershot x Mogul) half brother new on No.5, Casino. He is an all-rounder at the highest level, not only for production (RZM 148, +1,850 kg milk, +0.12 % fat, +0.01 % protein) and conformation (RZE 121, feet and legs 115, udder 119), but also for all functional traits (RZFit 147). Besides good milkability (RZD 111) he is a bull for calving ease, not only by slender calves (RZKd 110), but also by daughters with best calving traits (RZKm 121) in the long run. Casino descends from Mardi Gras x Planet on the maternal side.
Jameson (No.6, Jetset x Balisto) remains constant after the base shift (RZM 144, RZN 137) and is one of the best conformation bulls with RZE 132 (feet and legs 116, udder 136), this with medium body measurements including stature (102).
The highest Battlecry son is Barabo on No.7 now (RZM 139, RZE 126, RZN 143, feet and legs 123, udder 120) who has Balisto as maternal sire twice in his pedigree in the second generation.
Having the same RZG 159, another Battlecry son, Barkeeper, is on No.8 (RZM 145, RZE 129, feet and legs 124, udder 119), but out of a Galaxy daughter this time.
Having the combination RZE 134 (feet and legs 121, udder 138), RZN 136, RZR 118 and RZFit 153 the third newcomer in the Top-10, Royce (No.9), is very interesting. He can also be used on farms with automatic milking systems due to ideally placed teats. The somewhat lower predisposition for milk production (RZM 139, +1,440 kg, +0.05 % fat, +0.04 % protein) compared to the other top bulls can be ignored. Royce is one of the first Roxy B (Balisto x Mogul) sons out of a Supershot x Snowflake.
Kerrigan son Keith (No.10) can enter the Top-10. He can go up for RZN to 134 different than most of the Kerrigan sons whose longevity is estimated lower (RZM 143, RZE 132, feet and legs 119, udder 127).
Many quite complete and interesting newcomers are brought by Kerrigan (Kingboy x Numero Uno). The highest new Kerrigan son enters on No.18, Kensington (DS: Commander). He is out of a genomic, very successful Danish cow family because 6 half brothers of the dam of different sires were even used in Germany. Kensington (RZM 142, +1,298 kg milk, +0.19 % fat, +0.11 % protein) is strong for especially daughter fertility (RZR 123) and daughter calving traits (RZKm 120). The impressive linear shows lots of stature and capacity with best feet and legs (126) and udders (124, RZE 132). Almost all Kerrigan sons are clearly above average for teat length. Having teat length 129 Kensington is the highest of all Top-250 bulls and can be used to improve short teats.
The two new Kerrigan sons Kougar (No.65, RZM 140, RZE 129, feet and legs 116, udder 131, DS: Racer) and Kemal (No.78, RZM 140, RZE 129, feet and legs 115, udder 132, DS: Balisto) offer a similar breeding value profile, but only transmit medium-sized.
Keegan (new on No.117) is a typically good Kerrigan son (out of Lobach x Suran, RZM 140, RZE 128, feet and legs 113, udder 128), and can be used on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 132, RZD 109). The same is true for Keld (No.202, RZM 135, RZE 127, feet and legs 111, udder 124, DS: Tribune) whose linear is focused on stature (128) and body with teat length 128 (RZRobot 128).
Most of the 6 new Finder (Balisto x Epic) sons are characterized by lots of stature and body as well as longer teats. The highest ranking is Fisko on No.25 (dam: Commander x Numero Uno half sister of Kanu P). With RZE 136 he is not only good for udder (133) and feet and legs (119), but also transmits a lot of stature (131). Good components (+0.33 % fat, +0.16 % protein) combined with +1,082 kg milk are good for RZM 141. For the functional traits, there are no weaknesses (RZFit 146) and he can be recommended for farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 132, teat length 116, milkability RZD 110). In addition, he is positive for direct (RZKd 106) and daughter calving ease (RZKm 117).
Having only one point less (RZG 155) Finalist is new on No.27 (dam: Missouri x Beacon). His focus is clearly more on milk yield (+1,927 kg milk, -+0.26 % fat, -0.03 % protein, RZM 141) and he is the best Finder son for udder health (RZS 126) as well as a specialist for feet and legs (129, udder 121, RZE 128). He is also a bull for calving ease (RZKd 108, RZKm 124).
By far the highest Finder son for longevity (RZN 140) is Fixit (new on No.47, dam: Silver x Fanatic) and also one of the best for conformation with RZE 136 (feet and legs 129, udder 131). The fact that he is not as strong for production transmission as his half brothers (RZM 130, +940 kg milk, +0.10 % fat, +0.09 % protein), does not rank higher (RZFit 150, RZRobot 129).
Filou (new onNo.79) should be mentioned because of his more than just solid breeding values (RZM 133, RZE 133, feet and legs 131, udder 122, RZN 132) and the fact that he is a red carrier adds additional marketing potential (dam: Brekem x Mogul). Having RZKd 113 and RZKm 119 he is a perfect bull for calving ease and should transmit very good teat placement (SPv 104, SPh 91, RZRobot 127).
There are three new sons of Lighter (Pure x Numero Uno). The highest ranking may be Lomo (No.90, DS: Supershot) due to his production transmission (RZM 146, +2,398 kg milk, -0.32 % fat, -0.10 % protein), but he is not the most interesting one (RZE 118, feet and legs 111, udder 17). This is rather Lightlife (new on No.199, dam: Tribune x McCutchen). Having RZN 146 he is No.1 for longevity of all genomic Holstein bulls. With RZR 124, RZS 121, RZKm 110 as well as RZKd 111 he is a real fitness specialist (RZFit 151). With that conformation with RZE 127 (feet and legs 119, udder 131) does not miss out either whereas he transmits average for the body traits. He cannot keep up with most of the other genomic top-class bulls for production (RZM 118, +1,216 kg milk, -0.20 % fat, -0.3 % protein).
Finder son Like Snow (new on No.204, DS: Balisto) offers clearly more production (RZM 137) with very good conformation (+1,187 kg milk, +0.24 % fat, +0.07 % protein) and RZE 132 (feet and legs 124, udder 127). He is positive for the functional traits and can be recommended for use on heifers (RZKd 112).
Actros (No.30) is a new All In (Alright x Numero Uno) son who especially stands out for daughter fertility. With RZR 133 he is the second highest of all top bulls here. Having RZFit 152 he belongs to the Top-5 and can be used on heifers (RZKd 112, RZKm 120). For production (RZM 138, +1,323 kg milk, +0.03 % fat, +0.08 % protein) and conformation (RZE 118, feet and legs 113, udder 118) he has solid figures. Milkability should be kept in mind when mating (RZD 92).
Super Uno is one of the higher ranking, new Superhero (Supershot x Numero Uno) sons (No.63). Having Missouri and Numero Uno on the dam’s side, he is inbred to Numero Uno. His figures are balanced (RZE 124, feet and legs 118, udder 118) without any special strengths or weaknesses, but with lots of production (RZM 141, +1,618 kg milk, +0.20 % fat, -0.03 % protein).
Brady, new on No.115, is the second of so far three Bandares (Yoder x Massey) sons (RZM 141, +1,518 kg milk, +0.09 % fat, +0.03 % protein). He breeds tall animals with lots of substance (RZE 128, feet and legs 116, udder 122) whereas teat length (89) should be kept in mind. He is able to improve milkability clearly (RZD 117).
The sire of Ganderas (new on No.119) is Gatedancer (Alta1stClass x Supersire). On the maternal side, he descends via Supershot and Saloon from the Outside Kora family. With RZM 134 (+945 kg milk, +0.22 % fat, +0.12 % protein) there is not much to complain about in the conformation profile (RZE 128, feet and legs 116, udder 128).
Due to many different genomic sires of sons used there are several newcomers that are sheer special by the fact that they are (so far) the only sons of their sires. On No.42 is Monty (s. Montana = Montross x Numero Uno). His Pure dam is out of a full sister of Supershot. Monty convinces with daughter fertility (RZR 122) and longevity (RZN 137) with solid production (RZM 138, +1,647 kg milk, -0.01 % fat, -0.03 % protein) and conformation (RZE 120, feet and legs 106, udder 125).
Conformation (RZE 138, feet and legs 119, udder 132) with lots of stature and style is the only strength of the only County (Doorman x Snowman) son Cleo (No.85, dam: Balisto x Maxim). He compensates for somewhat low milk yield (+234 kg milk) with very high components (+0.53 % fat, +0.35 % protein, RZM 134).
Euclan (No.112) is a Euclid (Supershot x McCutchen) son having RZE 133 (feet and legs 116, udder 131) and RZM 137 (+1,483 kg milk, +0.02 % fat, +0.00 % protein) who can also be used on heifers (RZKd 111) and on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 128).
A modern, good linear with very good udders (125) and feet & legs (126) as well as average body traits (RZE 128) is offered by Converse (No.122, s. Concert = Crescendo x G-Force). Having RZM 131 (+1,032 kg milk, +0.04 % fat, +0.09 % protein), RZR 127 and RZN 130 he can be recommended for widespread use. He is a maternal half brother of Fixit on No.47 (dam: Silver x Fanatic).
Brosnan (No.171, RZM 140, RZE 124, feet and legs 121, udder 118) is the third highest of all top bulls for daughter calving traits (RZKm 125) and the only Bonum (Balisto x Epic) son (DS: Kooper). If you use him – on heifers as well (RZKd 109) –, you do not have to be worried about calving problems in the next generation.
We also have to mention the only Blacklist (Balisto x Garrett) son Bonello (RZM 134, +751 kg milk, +0.40 % fat, +0.16 % protein, RZE 128, feet and legs 123, udder 124, DS: Overbay) on No.193 as well as Fred (No.222, DS: Kingboy) as the only Magnus (Tuffenuff x Mogul) son (RZM 134, +917 kg milk, +0.26 % fat, +0.13 % protein, RZE 131, feet and legs 115, udder 129).
This proof run caused a lot in the polled segment, not only because of the new superstar Hotspot P on No.2. Due to the first five Mission P (Missouri x Asterix) sons and more Hologram P (Monterey x Numero Uno) sons, you can draw on plentiful resources among Holstein in the polled segment.
My Dream P (No.19) is the highest Mission P son. His cow family just proved what it is able to do: Skagen (Shotglass x Beacon), the new No.23 among the daughter proven bulls as he is a full brother of the dam of My Dream P. +1,416 kg milk combined with +0.22 % protein and +0.03 % fat result in RZM 150 of My Dream P. Regarding the enormous will to milk daughter fertility (RZR 121) and longevity (RZN 121) should not afflicted. The linear is clearly more positive than RZE 118 may show at first sight (feet and legs 106, udder 122). For daughter calving ease (RZKm 124) he belongs to the best bulls. Besides the polled gene My Dream P is also red carrier due to his sire!
MinecraftP (new on No.108, Misson P x Silver x Bedford) shows very good production breeding values (RZM 144, +1,268 kg milk, +0.17 % fat, +0.17 % protein) combined with more than solid conformation (RZE 124, feet and legs 116, udder 123) as well as no weaknesses for the functional traits.
Makari PP (No.177, s. Mission P) is homozygous polled as he got the second polled gene from the dam (Style P x Daddy). Having RZG 148 he is the No.1 among the homozygous polled bulls and the highest sire for milk yield of all polled bulls with +2,015 kg milk (-0.32 % fat, -0.10 % protein, RZM 137) as well as BB for Kappa Casein. The linear does not show any weaknesses (RZE 122, feet and legs 117, udder 119).
The homozygous polled bull Mix PP RDC is on No.234 with only 2 points less and RZG 146 (Mission P x Star x Ladd P, RZM 127, +635 kg milk, +0.12 % fat, +0.16 % protein). With RZE 132 he is the highest udder sire (137) of all polled bulls (feet and legs 113). Milkability should be kept in mind (RZD 87).
Having RZG 138 the heterozygous Mission-P son Mirando (DS: Commander) is not in the Top-250, but there will be a market for him with RZE 135 (feet and legs 118, udder 137) and RZM 123 (+867 kg milk, +0.06 % fat, +0.01 % protein) as well as without any weaknesses in the functional traits.
We have to mention Hashtag P (No.69) and HanSolo P (No.218) among the Hologram P sons. Both are characterized by outstanding longevity (RZN 136 and 135). Having a similar RZM (134 and 132) Hashtag P is rather a components sire (+909 kg milk, +0.19 % fat, +0.15 % protein) while HanSolo P is a sire for milk yield (+1,435 kg milk, -0.06 % fat, -0.04 % protein). Hashtag P descends from a Balisto x Epic out of the Tony Rae family and his linear confirms it. Unfortunately, short teats (84) prevent a higher udder classification (123) and, consequently, a higher RZE (126, feet and legs 118). HanSolo P is out of a German cow family (dam: Supershot x LetItSnow) and reaches udder 129 with normal teat length (feet and legs 114, RZE 125).
The top of the Red Holstein list brought some clear changes because 6 out of the 13 newcomers in the official Top-50 by gRZG are even in Top-10. The new No.1 Spark Red having RZG 162 tops the former No.1 Pace Red by even 6 points. Spark Red is the first Salvatore (Supershot x Sympatico) son (dam: Debutant x Brewmaster) and is out of a Canadian cow family that amongst others brought Elayo Red. He combines the second highest RZM of all bulls (150, +2,190 kg, -0.23 % fat, -0.02 % protein) with RZE 134 (feet and legs 129, udder 130) and can be used on heifers (RZKd 114, RZKm 115).
Pace Red (Pad-Red x Numero Uno) was crowded out to No.2 by Spark Red. He had led the top before since August 2016 which is almost for ever in times of quick generation intervals. His breeding values (base shift) are actually stable (RZM 145, +2,156 kg milk, -0.24 % fat, -0.08 % protein, RZE 122, feet and legs 113, udder 122). He – together with Spark Red – is the only Top-10 bull who can also be recommended for farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 122, milkability RZD 123). Pace Red semen has very good fertility.
He is followed by the second highest newcomer Gonzales on No.3. He is the first Great (Go Now RF x Morris) son who ranks on No.39 of the top list himself. The Brekem dam of Gonzales also has a Canadian origin. Different to the two bulls ahead of him Gonzales transmits very good components (RZM 146, +918 kg milk, +0.34 % fat, +0.34 % protein). Within conformation udder (127, RZE 121, feet and legs 107) with especially good teat position (not too tight in the rear,95, but good in the fore, 110) stand out. Gonzales can be used on heifers, too (RZKd 113, RZKm 115).
Sir John on No.4 is new as well and the first son of the sire Styx Red (Entitle x Sympatico). His figures are balanced (RZM 144, +1,881 kg milk, -0.35 % fat, +0.04 % protein, RZN 125, RZR 115). This is also true for conformation (RZE 121, feet and legs 115, udder 117), but it should be kept in mind that he tends to transmit shorter teats (91). Sir John should breed easily born calving calves (RZKd 114).
Bagno RDC (Balisto x Epic) is the only sire of sons having more than one son in Top-10. Three of his sons are on No.5, No.6 and No.8. The Bagno RDC sons benefit from the new estimation model for longevity. So Bonus Red (No.5, RZM 140, +1,681 kg milk, -0.07 % fat, -0.01 % protein, DS: Debutant) goes up for RZN from 127 to 130. For daughter fertility he jumps even higher with +6 points to RZR 113. He remains constant (base shift) for conformation (RZE 125, feet and legs 117, udder 122).
Having RZG 152 GP Berlino (DS: Go Now RF) ranks directly behind him on No.6 (RZM 147, RZN 132). Conformation with RZE 111 (feet and legs 98, udder 114) is not his strength and milkability (RZD 84) should be kept in mind when mating.
With same RZG 152 Backup is on No.8 (DS: Perfect Aiko). He combines lots of milk yield (+1,874 kg milk, -0.22 % fat, +0.02 % protein) with better conformation (RZE 124, feet and legs 119, udder 119). Somewhat shorter teats (86) should be kept in mind.
The newcomer and first red Mission P (Missouri x Asterix) son Mindmap P is on No.7. He offers the complete fitness package with RZE 128 (feet and legs 114, udder 131), RZS 130, RZN 133, RZR 104 and RZKm 112 (RZFit 143 = No.4). Production figures are nice as well (+1,491 kg milk, -0.25 % fat, +0.02 % protein, RZM 135). The only drop of bitterness is somewhat low milkability (RZD 90) of this very interesting polled bull who is pure German on the maternal side (Nugget RDC x Julandy x Zabing x Ludox x Bonatus).
Two more newcomers complete the Top-10. Payred on No.9 is the first Payball (Perfect Aiko x Snowman) son and descends from the combination Brekem x Alchemy on the dam’s side. Payred is the highest bull for RZFit having 149 (RZN 128, RZR 126, RZKm 120, RZS 104) with fantastic conformation (RZE 132, feet and legs 123, udder 125). He should breed tall animals with lots of capacity. However he can be used on heifers (RZKd 111). Somewhat shorter teats (89) should be kept in mind when mating.
For the fitness traits (RZFit 147) the new Nobel-Red (No.10, Nova Star x Whatsapp) is not second to none to Payred (RZN 133, RZR 117, RZKm 111), especially not for udder health (RZS 126). Nobel-Red is also the first son of his sire. The breeding profile of Nobel-Red is also faultless for production (RZM 132, +1,196 kg milk, -0.18 % fat, +0.08 % protein) and conformation (RZE 125, feet and legs 121, udder 124).
El Toro enters new outside the Top-10 (No.12). This Eloped Red (Sympatico x Alchemy) son is out of a US Racer daughter and Mogul from the Tony Rae family. The genetic background of the excellent conformation (RZE 130, feet and legs 111, udder 137) is no surprise. Having +1,894 kg milk and RZM 144 (-0.16 % fat, -0.01 % protein) he breeds highly efficient daughters with good milkability (RZD 112) and his calves should be born easily (RZKd 115).
Another Eloped Red son enters new on No.23, Epos Red (RZM 130, +1,516 kg milk, -0.07 % fat, -0.12 % protein). The first 4 generations of the maternal ancestors (dam: Brekem x Salve) are in Germany, but the Canadian Splendor family is in the background. Epos Red is the top of all bulls in the top list with RZE 136 for overall conformation (feet and legs 133, udder 130) and without transmitting extreme stature (107). As his paternal half brother, he can also be used on heifers (RZKd 111) and improves milkability (RZD 117).
Having the same RZG 147 two Nuance RDC (Nugget RDC x Snow RF) sons enter new on No.18 and on No.20. Nature (dam: Label P x Malvoy) is the better bull for milk production (RZM 142, +1,213 kg milk, +0.24 % fat, +0.15 % protein), but may not be high enough to meet interest with RZE 116 (feet and legs 110, udder 118). He is an absolute correctional bull for teat length (131!) and can be used on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 129). Network (dam: VH Booth x Dekade) also transmits positive components (+0.25 % fat, +0.03 % protein), but less milk (+1,083 kg, RZM 132) than Nature. Having RZE 128 (feet and legs 115, udder 129), RZS 122, RZN 124 and RZR 112 as well as good calving ease (RZKd 113) he can be widely used.
Finally we have to mention the newcomer Bergamo (No.43) with RZG 143. This Bretagne (Brekem x Dakker) son out of the Massia family (dam: Citation P x Snowman) excels with his linear including lots of stature (129) and body with best udders (RZE 133, feet and legs 115, udder 130). Moreover, he transmits somewhat longer teats as desired (116). There is nothing to complain about regarding milk production (RZM 135, +1,362 kg milk, +0.11 % fat, -0.01 % protein) and the breeding values for the functional traits.
It has been a very successful proof run for the Red Holsteins, with many high bulls of new sires of sons that can be widely used. Only the number of new polled sires is quite low this time. However the great number of Mission P sons will definitely follow in August and Mindmap P on No.7 already quickens the appetite.
