News proof run 04-2018

Improvements and base shift

As every April, the base for all breeding values was updated so that a breeding value of 100 and ± 0.0 respectively represents the average of the currently alive cow population. In 2018, all cows born 2012-2014 of the particular breed are the basis (so far: cows born 2011-2013). Breeding value changes resulting from the base shift independent of additional information cannot be calculated that exactly this time for longevity (RZN), daughter fertility (RZR) and calving traits (RZKm) and, therefore, for the RZG. There are improvements for longevity, first to last insemination cows and calving traits. Especially the introduction of improved breeding value estimation for longevity resulted in clear RZN changes for established bulls as well (please visit www.vit.de for information on the new EBV longevity). As longevity has a really high weighting within the total merit index RZG with 20%, there are significant rank changes of some established bulls, too.

The chart shows average breeding value changes due to base shift and new breeding value estimation methods:

Less than half (Holstein -1.8) of the clearly medium deduction of the RZN figures (Holstein -4.2) is based on the actual breeding progress for longevity. The bigger part is technically due to the fact that longevity can be estimated with an animal model for the first time now and so the definition of a real cow base is possible (so far: approximate solution from old sire/DS model).

Holstein

Mattis is the new list leader and a brand-new Massey (s. Mascol) son. He descends from a pure French cow family having the maternal sire line-up Man-O-Man, Frosty, Shottle and Saturn. Mattis is on top especially because of RZM 151 (+1,399 kg milk, +0.09 % fat, +0.24 % protein). For conformation, he does not have any weaknesses, but he may be too low with RZE 104 (feet and legs 101, udder 109). Udder health is just average with RZS 99.

No.1 for RZM with 154 (+2,105 kg milk, +0.14 % fat, +0.01 % protein) is the former and new No.2, Murano (Mogul x Man-O-Man).

The highest newcomer and former list leader of December, Mocon (Morgan x Snowman), increases his daughters from 29 to 145 and loses 5 RZM points to 138. With this, he is on No.3 now (RZE 103, feet and legs 103, udder 110). Having RZFit 134 he remains strong for the functional traits, even with the new RZN (126, +1).

After having a loss of 5 RZM points in December, Foster (G-Force x Mascol) compensates this with +7 points to RZM 138 (+729 kg milk, +0.13 % fat, +0.30 % protein) and is in the Top-10 (No.4) for the first time based on 236 daughters (+100). With RZE 110 (feet and legs 120, udder 107), RZS 107, RZN 119 and RZR 108 his daughters can be described functional rather than strong for conformation.

The popular Bookem sons Boss and Big Point assert themselves in the Top-10 with 4,851 and 6,851 daughters at the age of just 6. However Boss passed his half brother with RZG 143 this time (No.5, RZM 136, RZE 116, feet and legs 124, udder 104). Former No.1 Big Point (No.10 now) is really strong for longevity with the new RZN (126).

Force (G-Force x Planet) with RZG 143 is unchanged with 4,907 daughters.

The full brother of Murano on No.2 is Morgan (Mogul x Man-O-Man) who is nearly unchanged with 173 daughters now (base shift) and is on No.7 (No.6 in December). For RZM he cannot reach his full brother with 140 (+1,279 kg milk, +0.40 % fat, +0.04 % protein), but he is clearly better for RZN with 117 and for RZR with 106. The Morgan daughters are medium-sized and stylish (RZE 109, feet and legs 107, udder 109) and he is an excellent bull for calving ease with RZKd 112 as well as RZKm 114 due to calves born easily. These calves will have above average calving traits later.

Garvin (No.8, DS: Super) is the third G-Force son in the Top-10. He goes up for production from RZM 133 to 135 by (base shift) even 4 points (+910 kg milk, +0.16 % fat, +0.17 % protein). His linear is clearly better than expected with RZE 110 (feet and legs 112, udder 108). As typical G-Force son, he is strong for longevity (RZN 122). He improved milkability a little (RZD 89), but it still should be kept in mind when mating.

Mogul son Matchball (DS: Man-O-Man) is on No.9. He was the second highest newcomer in December on No.4. He only has 73 daughters with his second breeding value because he was not that frequently used as genomic bull (RZM 137, +1,507 kg milk, +0.04% fat, +0.00% protein).

New bulls

The number of new bulls in the official daughter proven Top-250 is a little lower than usual as the RZN from the new model comes a little later than before. However the early RZN’s are based on daughter culling information as well as information on the time daughters remain in the herd in the first lactation and not only on daughter based calculation input features.

Swing, the first Shaw (Freddie x Planet) son, had his debut in December (No.41 now, RZM 136, RZE 117, feet and legs 115, udder 102), now 5 more are following. The highest and so far best is Sinclair new on No.18. For RZE (118) and especially for udder with 120 (feet and legs 115) he is so far the best Shaw son as his half brothers cannot come above udder 108. Different compared to his half brothers, Sinclair is also positive for daughter fertility (RZR 110). He offers a balanced profile based on 72 daughters now with RZM 128 (+1,343 kg milk, -0.05 % fat, -0.06 % protein), RZS 111 and RZN 121. Regarding body traits, with stature 91, he shows positive strength (111), depth (104) and condition (BCS 116) which is a rare combination and so he can be used to correct too tall and narrow animals. On the dam’s side Sinclair descends via Beacon, Goldwyn, Bormio and Convincer from a full sister of Etazon Addison. Sinclair can be used on heifers (RZKd 110, almost 3,000 progeny) and on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 113).

Sinclair

Maldini new on No.19, is another high Mogul son. RZM 133 and RZE 129 (feet and legs 115, udder 129) are promising, but are only based on 29 daughters in the beginning of their first lactation, 19 of them are classified. Further development of this bull descending from a Dutch Snowman x Shottle remains to be seen.

The figures of the new Mogul son Morello (No.87) are based on more data. He already has 160 daughters in milk. With RZE 133 he is the second highest of all 39 daughter proven Mogul sons (feet and legs 116, udder 130). The linear is faultless except somewhat steeper legs (77). Morello is out of a VG 86 Super daughter and a EX 91 Shottle daughter. Having good milk production (+1,494 kg milk, RZM 120) components are somewhat weaker (-0.19 % fat, -0.21 % protein).

Skagen (new on No.23) is a Shotglass son out of Beacon x Juwel whose high debut is especially due to milk production (RZM 136, +1,767 kg milk, -0.14 % fat, -0.07 % protein), but only based on 27 daughters in the beginning of their first lactation. With RZE 109 (feet and legs 117, udder 106) the further development of this bull more frequently used genomic sire (RZKd 117, 3,746 progeny) from the same cow family as Emil II remains to be seen.

Lucingo (new on No.29) is so far the highest LetItSnow son out of VG 87 Gerard x EX 90 Goldwyn and attracts lots of attention with RZM 142 (+1,356 kg milk, +0.16 % fat, +0.09 % protein) and RZE 130 (feet and legs 111, udder 126). Having lots of stature (124) and body (121), especially the extreme rear udder height with 134 stands out in the linear (43 classified daughters).

Lucingo

Superman (No.78) is a new Supersire son out of Anderstrup Snow Heaven and, therefore, a half brother of amongst others the former genomic No.1 Cinema. Superman already has 337 daughters in milk (RZM 133, +1,201 kg milk, +0.05 % fat, +0.04 % protein), but only 32 of them are classified. As most of the Supersire sons, conformation is solid (RZE 114, feet and legs 101, udder 116), but not outstanding. The weakness of Superman is below average daughter fertility (RZR 84).

Explizit is really different. He is a late new Epic son on No.80. His dam is WEH Janett (s. Bronco) from the famous J family of Hintze, Trebel, that has two more daughter proven sons in the top list with Monokel (No.50, RZM 142, RZE 117) and Giotto (No.226, RZM 122, RZE 123). Explizit was really frequently used as genomic bull and comes up to expectations based on already 279 daughters. Having solid production figures (RZM 124, +1,105 kg milk, -0.17 % fat, +0.00 % protein), he convinces with RZE 123 and especially with udder 124 here (feet and legs 109). He is a very reliable calving ease bull (RZKd 114, 14,506 progeny) and improves milkability (RZD 109). For longevity (RZN 114) and daughter fertility (RZR 117), he is clearly positive.

There are 18 daughter proven Meridian sons now and the new Malaga (No.96) is the third highest with RZG 130 of them and the second highest for RZE with 127 (feet and legs 122, udder 116). This is no surprise as his dam Heidenskipster Goldwyn Destiny is the full sister of amongst others Goldday and Danillo and already has large influence on the population with sons like Beart. Her new son Malaga may not have that big influence because he is just average for functionality (RZS 103, RZN 99, RZR 97). You will like him when you are looking for tall (133) and deep (117) dairy animals.

Fanatic has the most new daughter proven sons (7). Strong for functionality as the sire, most of them are just average for conformation. One exception is Forrest, new on No.111, with RZE 122 (feet and legs 112, udder 127). He is an example of how different full brothers can be as Forrest is the little younger full brother of Famous (Fanatic x Beacon). Both have the same RZG 130, but really different for conformation (Famous RZE 106).

Dante (No.133) is the first daughter proven Doorman son and seems to fulfil expectations for conformation in particular. Based on the first 42 daughters, 27 classified, he reaches RZE 127 with really strongly attached udders (udder 127, feet and legs 113, dam: Snowman x Roumare). Having lower milk yield (+78 kg), components are clearly positive (+0.28 % fat, +0.18 % protein, RZM 116). Besides conformation and components Dante also offers very good udder health (RZS 124).

Further development

Maibach (Meridian x Snowman) debuted on No.35 in December with just 24 daughters. He has 361 daughters now and ranks on No.12. Despite base shift he wins 2 RZM points to 140 (+2,086 kg milk, -0.30 % fat, -0.08 % protein) and even 3 for RZS to 121 now. For conformation he has losses due to the base shift (RZE 113, feet and legs 102, udder 116). Maibach breeds tall, dairy daughters and can be used on heifers (RZKd 111). Due to an increase of 8 points he is average for daughter fertility now (RZR 97).

The first daughter proven McCutchen son Macperl (DS: Gerard) attracted lots of attention in December thanks to outstanding conformation breeding values. His second breeding value is based on 214 daughters now and he is on No.116 with RZE 130 (feet and legs 118, udder 131) and RZM 118 (+832 kg milk, +0.06 % fat, -0.04 % protein).

Nugget RDC (No.120 now) could assert himself very well. He may remain the second highest Numero Uno son (DS: Destry), but has clear losses with already low milk yield (-374 kg milk, +0.77 % fat, +0.17 % protein, RZM 110). For the fitness breeding values, he is still very good with RZS 115, RZN 126, RZR 120 and RZKm 115 (RZFit 137).

Mogul son Mercury (DS: Domain) already has his third breeding value and 1,104 daughters to date going up to No.22 (RZM 120, RZE 127, feet and legs 127, udder 129). He is owned by Qnetics, the merger of LTR and ZBH. Having direct calving ease RZKd 112 and daughter calving traits RZKm 119 he is the ideal bull for calving ease.

Slight losses are the result of the change of the estimation model for longevity for another Mogul son, Masato (DS: Man-O-Man, RZN 96, -6). Having RZM 133 and RZE 125 (feet and legs 123, udder 125) he may still be very attractive.

The two Bookem sons Beladi (No.32, DS: Massey) and Banesto (No.73, DS: Xacobeo) are constant by RZG (base shift), but with different detail development. Beladi (RZM 123, RZE 111, feet and legs 99, udder 115) clearly wins for daughter fertility (RZR 122) and for maternal calving ease (RZKm 121) with constantly high longevity (RZN 123). Banesto belongs to the absolute winners for RZN (131, +7), but slightly loses for production (RZM 116), with still excellent conformation (RZE 126, feet and legs 107, udder 125) and very high reliability (5,494 daughters).

G.Farell, Gordan and the Epic sons Elody, Epochal and Eragon as well as Godewind are from the same birth cohort 2012.

While G.Farell (No.77, s. G-Force, RZM 115, RZE 126) and Gordan (No.82, s. Gold Chip, RZM 123, RZE 120) were not used that much as genomic bulls with 158 and 118 daughters, the Epic sons were in great demand. Epochal (DS: Planet) already has 5,512 daughters in milk (+1,223, RZM 113, RZE 131) while Elody (No.110, DS: Xacobeo, RZM 121, RZE 130) and Eragon (DS. Bogart, RZM 114, RZE 113) reach almost 600 daughters. Godewind as conformation specialist was in high demand as genomic bull too (1,342 daughters, RZE 134, feet and legs 119, udder 132, s. Gold Chip).

The two Snowman sons Snowboard (No.17, RZM 134, RZE 105) and Snowflake (#71, RZM 134, RZE 117) have thousands of daughters.

The same is true for the Freddie son Ferrari (No.129, RZM 116, RZE 118) who goes up a little for production (base shift).

Biathlon (No.81, s. Beacon) belongs to the winners with RZN 122 (RZM 116, RZE 124).

Jentin (s. Jeeves, RZM 117), born in 2009, was one of the last bulls with test period, but adds 1,585 daughters now. He goes up for RZN (118, +3) and RZR (128, +3).

A total of 102 Man-O-Man sons was tested. At the end of the day, Maserati (No.151, DS: Pronto) came out as the best in the combination of production (RZM 119) and especially conformation (RZE 127, feet and legs 122, udder 116).

Red Holstein

Among Red Holstein, Snake Red can keep his top position. Two bulls of 8 new bulls in the Top-50 can debut in the Top-5.

Despite the increase of daughters from 175 to 850 now Snake Red (Snow RF x Destry) is still No.1. He claimed this position with his first daughter proven breeding values in December. With losses for production (base shift) to RZM 137 (+1,409 kg milk, -0.13 % fat, +0.07 % protein) he goes up for longevity (RZN 111, +6). The number of classified daughters increased from 115 to 319 as well which has no influence on the conformation breeding values (RZE 124, feet and legs 104, udder 129).

Julandy remains unique with the combination of RZM 139 (+1,390 kg milk, -0.40 % fat, +0.17 % protein) and RZE 129 (feet and legs 118, udder 122) and is clearly one of the winners according to the new estimation model for longevity with RZN 103 (+8) now. Julandy can still be recommended for use on farms with automatic milking systems (RZRobot 120).

The highest newcomer is the Snow RF son Soko Red (No.3, dam: Gerard x Mr.Burns) this time again.

The second highest newcomer follows on No.4, Dakker son Dalman (dam: Jerudo x Malvoy). As the two other new Dakker sons Falcone (No.12, RZM 134) and Databank (No.39, RZM 124), Dalman cannot go above RZE 105 (feet and legs 105, udder 100).

Dalman

Lago P (No.5) is the highest polled bull now. He debuted based on less daughters in December. The Ladd P son now reaches improved RZM 131 with 148 daughters (+1,085 kg milk, -0.08 % fat, +0.08 % protein), RZE 113 (feet and legs 99, udder 124) and RZN 116. Lago P descends via Kylian and Spencer 2 from the Remarlinda family, has good fertility and can be used on heifers (RZKd 109, 2,123 progeny).

Jerrylee (No.6) goes up by one position still having only 100 daughters even though he loses for milk (RZM 127) and conformation (RZE 120). Regarding longevity (RZN 114, +8) and daughter fertility (RZR 108, +6) he is one of the beneficiaries of the introductions in the proof run.

A part of Red Mist‘s (No.7, RZM 133, RZE 107, feet and legs 117, udder 97) 1,161 daughters daughters is in third lactation now and he wins even 11 RZN points to 117.

Coloredo P (No.8, Colt-P x Super) doubles his daughters to 1,524 and has to give away the gains for production from December (RZM 135, RZE 105, feet and legs 96, udder 105), but goes up for longevity, too (RZN 118).

Falcone

Lamano P (Ladd P x Man-O-Man out of the Splendor family) entered new based on just 35 daughters in December. He cannot only increase the number of his daughters to 108, but also his production breeding values (RZM 129). The extreme components sire (+0.67 % fat, +0.36 % protein) is, despite base shift of -63 kg milk, positive for milk yield (+118 kg). Regarding conformation, Lamano P (RZKd 116) goes up slightly (base shift) and he can be recommended for use on heifers (RZE 121, feet and legs 97, udder 124). It has to be kept in mind when mating that Lamano P is CD carrier.

There are two new interesting sires outside the Top-10. Effort (Ellmau x Snowman), former genomic No.1, enters on No.21 based on 118 daughters in milk (94 classified). For production transmission, he is below his genomic level for now with RZM 114 (+883 kg milk, -0.28 % fat, -0.09 % protein), but he comes up to the high expectations for conformation (RZE 129, feet and legs 115, udder 129) and udder health (RZS 127). Effort breeds tall (119) daughters with lots of depth and strength (body 118). These traits are also proved by his calves. That is why Effort (5,271 progeny) should not be used on heifers (RZKd 84).

Another Ellmau son and genomic high ranking bull enters and is very promising, Edelmut (No.26, dam: Sterngold x Zenson). However his breeding values only include information of just 24 early daughters in milk (21 of them are classified). With RZM 116 (+572 kg milk, +0.08 % fat, +0.01 % protein) as well as RZE 120 (feet and legs 114, udder 127) he is quite on the same level as his last – pure genomic breeding – values.

Further development

Fageno (No.16, s. Fidji), despite base shift, goes up by one RZG point to 129, due to clearly higher RZN 124 (+13). It remains a guess if the reason for this is that his daughters are in second lactation now or that it is due to the change of the estimation method. He remains stable (base shift) for production and conformation with 5,580 daughters now (RZM 124, RZE 108, feet and legs 108, udder 100).

Nitro P (No.36) entered new in December as first CD-free Ladd P son based on just 58 daughters. The full brother of Label P (No.15) loses slightly for production with 190 daughters now (RZM 121, +592 kg milk, +0.03 % fat, +0.12 % protein) and cannot keep his conformation figures completely (RZE 113, feet and legs 102, udder 113). Nitro P remains the first choice for easy calving (RZKd 127, 2,265 progeny).

Mad Max (s. Destry) belongs to the best 5 conformation sires of the breed with RZE 130 and feet and legs 112 as well as udder 130 based on 566 classified daughters (RZM 103).
