Genomic newcomers in December 2017

The measure is lifted to gRZG 165 by the new No.1 Braveness. Kerrigan has most of the 62 newcomers (17). Among Red Holstein, Pace Red defends his top position clearly.

Toplist Red Holstein (genomic tested bulls)

The total number of new bulls in the Top-250 is a little less with 62 compared to August and April. Reason is probably that the number of new genomic sires has decreased to approx. 250 per year in the meantime now. This number is still approx. 2.5 times as big as the number of sires going to second crop in times before genomics. The three sires having most of the newcomers prove how fast the change among sires of sons is: Kerrigan (Kingboy x Numero Uno), Lighter (Pure x Numero Uno) and Hologram P (Monterey x Numero Uno) with 14, 6 and 4 sons that are all new. Battlecry, the main “supplier” of new sons in August and April and a total of 24 sons in the top list, only adds 2 “late-comers”.

One of the two first Bandares (Yoder x Massey) sons on top is Braveness.

He puts the measure up by three points having gRZG 165. He is a maternal half brother of Pinterault, who is on No.8 now (s. Penley, RZM 146, RZE 119, feet and legs 104, udder 123). The Balisto dam of these two descends via Numero Uno and Planet from the successful Missy family. Braveness owes his high rank not only to production transmission first and foremost (RZM 149, +1,866 kg, -0.01 % fat, +0.05 % protein), but to strong functional traits with, amongst others, RZN 137 and RZR 118 (RZFit 143). Regarding conformation, his strengths are udder (129, feet and legs 105, RZE 122).

Lightstar, new on No.2, is the highest Lighter son with gRZG 163. Lightstar was raised from a German cow family (dam: Model x Goldday). Despite almost +2,000 kg milk with neutral components (RZM 148), his strengths are functional traits as well (RZR 130, RZN 131). Within RZE 122, Lightstar does best for feet and legs with 121 (udder 114).

His full brother Lemon (No.118, gRZG 151) who is new as well is even better for functionality: RZN 142, RZR 127, RZD 113 (RZFit 146). He is also better than his higher ranking full brother for conformation with RZE 125, feet and legs 120 and udder 124, but not for RZM with 127 (+1,385 kg milk, -0.08 % fat, -0.09 % protein).

Having gRZG 163, Summerlake is just close behind Lightstar on No.3. He is the highest ranking of 3 new DG Charley (Supershot x Mogul) sons. The strength of Summerlake (dam: Balisto x Mogul) is RZM 151 due to strong components (+1,566 kg milk, +0.43 % fat, +0.09 % protein) and RZE 119 (feet and legs 115, udder 116).

Because of the three newcomers on the top, the No.1 of August, Avicii, is on No.4 now despite unchanged gRZG 162. The Araxis (Balisto x Numero Uno) son out of Montross x Numero Uno x full sister of McCutchen is No.2 of all bulls for fitness with RZFit 152 (RZN 137, RZR 126, RZS 115, RZKm 115, RZKd 112, RZD 116) having sufficient production (RZM 142) and good conformation (RZE 126, feet and legs 118, udder 124) at the same time.

By gaining one RZG point Bestday (Bestboss x Balisto) is still on No.5. The slight win comes from production that is strong anyway (RZM 154) with unchanged RZE 123 (feet and legs 111, udder 125).

The new Baldini (No.6) is a VH Bandini (Big Point x Bowser) son out of a Danish cow family. The young Commander dam from Bynke is a half sister of 4 Supershot and Missouri sons respectively in the top list. Having RZM 155 he is the strongest newcomer for production (+2,013 kg milk, -0.09 % fat, +0.11 % protein), but also the weakest for conformation in the Top-10 with RZE 116 (feet and legs 107, udder 116).

The best bull for overall conformation in the Top-10 is behind him directly on No.7, Jameson (RZE 134, feet and legs 117, udder 139). Daughter fertility of this Jetset son out of Balisto is a little low with RZR 97 (RZM 145).

The Top-10 bulls descend from 10 different sires. Balisto dominates as dam’s sire with 5 grandsons.

More newcomers

None of the first wave of the Kerrigan sons made it to the Top-10, but 14 half brothers are mostly very balanced and interesting.

Highest ranking Kerrigan son is Konga on No.14 with RZM 150 (+1,480 kg milk, +0.26 % fat, +0.15 % protein). He is out of a young German Missouri x Denim and should transmit good udders (125) and feet & legs (122, RZE 129). The Konga daughters may be too tall for some farms (129).

Karibu, new on No.96, is outstanding for overall conformation with RZE 137 (RZM 138, dam: Tribune x Shamrock). He also breeds tall daughters with lots of body, good feet and legs (119) and very good udders (132). Without any weakness for the functional traits (RZFit 141), milking speed is very good (RZD 116).

Having almost the same RZE with 136 and very similar linear, Kontex is new on No.73 (feet and legs 123, udder 128). His dam is a Commander x Beacon. Kontex reaches RZM 145 due to strong components (+1,272 kg milk, +0.27 % fat, +0.15 % protein) and can be recommended for robot milking farms (RZRobot 122).

Khedira, new on No.81, has a Commander dam, too (RZM 142, RZE 132, feet and legs 121, udder 126).

The two polled Kerrigan sons Kodiac P and Keeper P are interesting as well. Kodiac P is on No.119 (RZM 139, RZE 122, feet and legs 107, udder 127) due to RZN 129 and he got the polled gene from the maternal grand sire Parker P (DS: Supershot). Keeper P (#175) got the polled gene via a Supershot daughter as dam, but out of Ladd P this time. Keeper P transmits lots of milk with neutral components (RZM 140) and, especially, excellent conformation (RZE 135, feet and legs 118, udder 132). As for most Kerrigan sons, he promises lots of stature and capacity.

The first 3 DG Charley sons all rank high. Following Summerlake on No.3 Noel is on No.11 (RZM 140), the second highest and is clearly better with RZE 135 (feet and legs 129, udder 131) than his half brothers. Having RZFit 149 he is also very good for the functional traits (amongst others RZN 138). His young Supershot dam is housed in the Netherlands, but descends from a Danish Numero Uno from the same maternal line like Lexington, Lobach, Lennon and Leno.

Charking (DG Charley x Misouri x Supersire) is on No.35 with RZM 136, RZN 137 and RZS 133 (RZFit 145). He is one of the few bulls combining a udder breeding value above 130 with suitability for automatic milking systems (RZRobot 128) and, additionally, clearly above average udder health (RZE 126, feet and legs 111).

More than the half of the new bulls has sires of sons with only one or two sons.

Barbados (No.16) is a late Battlecry son out of Racer x Epic. He is the highest with RZE 141 among the 24 half brothers (feet and legs 130, udder 134)! His Racer dam has another high newcomer in the Top-50 with Daxer (s. Damaris, No.45, RZM 145, RZE 120) and is a half sister of Barcley (No.26, Balisto x Epic). Barbados also offers, besides, outstanding conformation figures, good longevity (RZN 133), RZM 137 (+888 kg milk, +0.35 % fat, +0.17 % protein) and RZFit 149. There are not many conformation sires having such a complete profile.

Another late Battlecry son is Badano on No.68 with RZM 140 (+1,132 kg milk, +0.14 % fat, +0.16 % protein) and RZE 135 (feet and legs 128, udder 124). He should transmit lots of strength (112) and depth (115) with adequate stature (112) as well as type (117) and sufficient BCS (100). Badano descends from a Danno sister of Bow Finder (Balisto x Epic), one of the most frequently used sires in the Netherlands.

If you are looking for great feet and legs (130) and udders (135), but medium body stature, you should use the Modesty (Pety x Supersire) son Marabou (#37). He may not be new, but he is in the top list for the first time because he did not have all tests for CVM, BLAD, Brachyspina and cholesterol deficit (CD). Of course Marabou does not have any of these. Besides strong feet and legs & udders, he offers RZM 138 and RZN 133 as well as an alternative maternal sire line-up (Racer x Day x Jeeves x Zenith). Marabou can also be used on heifers (RZKd 115) and transmits good milkability (RZD 118).

Missouri has two high sons: Metaxa (No.52) and Mentos (No.82). Both are full brothers out of a Canadian Balisto daughter out of Mogul. Metaxa is a little better for conformation (RZE 133, feet and legs 124, udder 131) with RZM 142 (RZFit 141). He can be recommended for farms using automatic milking systems (RZRobot 130) and, in addition, he is a good bull for calving ease (RZKd 110). Moreover, he breeds daughters with good calving traits (RZKm 113). Mentos is better for production (RZM 147, +1,823 kg milk, -0.05 % fat, +0.05 % protein) and reaches RZE 129 (feet and legs 117, udder 129). Having RZD 123 he belongs to the 5 highest bulls for milkability (RZS 105).

Alabama (new on No.61) is an All In (Alright x Numero Uno) son from the J family of Hintze. His dam is a Balisto out of a full sister of Godewind (Gold Chip x Gerard). Alabama is an all-rounder (RZM 138, RZE 126, RZS 121, RZN 134, RZR 108) who can be used on heifers, too (RZKd 113).

With RZM 135, RZE 132 (feet and legs 131, udder 121) and RZN 135 there is not much to complain about the new Board son Blandos (No.113, DS: Anton).

The same is true for Aberdeen (No.115) having the same gRZG 152 (RZM 144, +0.34 % fat, +0.18 % protein, RZE 136, feet and legs 126, udder 129).

First (No.137), as new genomic sire and last newcomer in the top list, may have not that much production with +613 kg milk (RZM 130, +0.26 % fat, +0.19 % protein), but RZE 140 (feet and legs 129, udder 131) as well as direct (RZKd 117) and daughter calving ease (RZKm 113) and RZFit 147 as well as RZRobot 127 may attract lots of people anyway. First is a Bow Finder son out of Racer x Epic.

There are even 9 new heterozygous polled bulls in the Top-250, the sire of 4 of them is Hologram P (Monterey x Numero Uno x Lawn Boy). Highest ranking is the Superhero (Supershot x Numero Uno) son Hansa P on No.29. Hansa P got the polled gene from his dam Herz P (s. PowerballP). He would be an interesting sire anyway with RZM 144 (+1,434 kg milk, +0.10 % fat, +0.12 % protein), RZE 129 (feet and legs 112, udder 128), RZN 127 and RZFit 139 with milkability RZD 128. On the maternal side Hansa P descends via Saloon, Snowman and Goldwyn from Outside Kora EX 94. An even younger full brother with even higher breeding values is already waiting.

Hornbill (Hologram P x Nominee x Punch), new on No.169, does not have a “P”, but he is polled though. Like Hansa P he is out of the dam’s line based on a famous Outside daughter, Dabble EX 91. It may be a coincidence or not, the linear is also very similar with lots of stature and type, nice feet and legs (111) and very good udders (124). RZN 131 is similar as well.

Hamadi P (No.226) is a Hologram P out of Balisto x Cameron with RZM 138 (+1,036 kg milk, +0.11 % fat, +0.18 % protein) and RZE 125 (feet and legs 109, udder 126).

Red Holstein

There are only 9 new bulls among the Red Holstein Top-50 this time, 6 of them are in the Top-10.

Pace Red (Pad-Red x Numero Uno) defends his top position with gRZG 159 and a gap of 6 points. With RZM 148 (+2,229 kg milk, -0.23 % fat, -0.06 % protein) and RZE 123 (feet and legs 113, udder 122) he is the only Top-10 bull that can be recommended for robot milking farms (RZRobot 123). Pace Red has even won for milkability to RZD 124 now.

On No.2 he is followed by the highest newcomer Bonus Red. He is one of 4 sons of Bagno RDC (Balisto x Epic) in the Top-10 now. The highly efficient dam (Debutant x Snow RF) is out of the Dutch Rita’s of de Jong. Bonus Red transmits adequate milk with neutral components (RZM 141) and good longevity (RZN 128). Having very good conformation (RZE 127) with especially stature (129) the focus is on udders (125). However, teats are somewhat short (87, feet and legs 118).

Having the same gRZG 153 GP Berlino is on No.3 (RZM 147, RZN 130) closely behind Bonus Red. He is not that new, but meets all requirements to be in the top list for the first time. He is a Bagno RDC son, but out of a German Go Now RF x Serano. The linear is a little mixed (RZE 112) and the tendency of steep legs (80, feet and legs 99, udder 116) as well as milkability (RZD 85) should be kept in mind.

The new Juling (No.4) has a very nice linear with RZE 128 (feet and legs 120, udder 122). Juling is the so far only son of the French Ju Red (Brekem x Alchemy) out of a Dutch Lexington sister of Effort and Lazar P. Having +2,459 kg Juling is No.1 for milk yield (RZM 143, -0.45 % fat, -0.17 % protein).

Ariba Red (No.5) transmits more than just sufficient milk yield with +2,071 kg milk and acceptable components (-0.28 % fat, +0.00 % protein, RZM 148). His sire Akyol Red is out of the combination of Brekem x Alchemy. Ariba Red is a very balanced, good all-rounder (RZE 122, feet and legs 110, udder 117) who is able to correct too short teats with teat length 126.

Argus P (No.6, Apoll P x Fageno) remains the highest polled bull. Despite +2,083 kg milk with almost neutral components (RZM 147) he promises clearly above average udders (127, feet and legs 105, RZE 122).

Argus P

With same gRZG 151 the homozygous polled Abi Red PP is on No.8. For production transmission he is the No.2 with RZM 152 due to positive components (+0.22 % fat, +0.09 % protein) with lots of milk. For conformation there is not much to complain about (RZE 121, feet and legs 109, udder 120), but daughter fertility is low (RZR 90).

Between these two having the same gRZG 151 is Backup (Bagno RDC x Perfekt Aiko). The son from the Massia family shows a very nice linear with short teats (87, udder 121, feet and legs 121, RZE 127).

The third new Bagno RDC son is Breakfast on No.9. The combination Brekem x Alchemy is on the dam’s side of him. Breakfast transmits very good udders (129) and nice feet and legs (110, RZE 126) and adequate production (+1,526 kg milk, -0.33 % fat, +0.04 % protein, RZM 136). With RZFit 138 he does not have any faults for the functional traits and can be recommended as calving ease bull (RZKd 110) who also improves the calving traits via his daughters (RZKm 111).

After Silky (No.14), Sakai Red is the second, high Sveen P (Long P x Epic) son, but not polled. The combination of RZM 141 (+1,378 kg milk, +0.19 % fat, +0.08 % protein) with RZE 133 (feet and legs 116, udder 133) guarantees a great demand. Besides best udders and good milkability (RZD 110) we can expect from this son of the Massia family (dam: Aikman x Glorious) tall (128) daughters with lots of strength and capacity (body 120).

Sakai Red

Outside the Top-10 Breakdance has his debut on No.44. He is one of 6 Brekan (Brekem x Destry) sons in the top list now (dam: Kanu P x Lithium). RZE 127 (feet and legs 113, udder 130) with not that much stature (RZS 127, RZN 129, RZFit 136) and above average calving traits (RZKd 108, RZKm 105) make him really attractive. To even rank higher in the top list, he should have +887 kg more milk, but the components are positive (+0.17 % fat, +0.02 % protein, RZM 125).

So finally there are two more good news on polled breeding: Delio P (new on No.28) and Atomic PP (new on No.30). Delio P is a Deal-Red P (Debutant x Snowman) son out of the full sister of Nuance RDC (Nugget RDC x Snow RF) who is in the genomic Holstein top list. The breeding value profile of Delio P with RZM 140 (+1,305 kg milk, +0.27 % fat, +0.07 % protein) is somewhat focused on production (RZE 116, feet and legs 117, udder 111).

Atomic PP offers real all-round qualities with RZM 136 (+1,505 kg milk, -0.04 % fat, -0.01 % protein) and RZE 128 (feet and legs 113, udder 127) as well as RZFit 132. Atomic PP is probably the last Apoll P son because there are 10 more sons even in the Top-50. The second polled gene comes from the dam (Fageno x Laron P) that decends from the Tony Rae family.
