Former genomic stars build completely new top list of daughter proven bulls in April 2017

The first daughter proven Mogul and Epic sons break the dominance of the Bookem sons in the Top-10. Big Point is still on top. Among Red Holstein, the former genomic No.2, Eragon, debuts well in the Top-5 and more high sons confirm the transmission power of Laron P.

Annual base shift for all traits

The new basis for all breeding values is now built by all cows having own production born 2011 – 2013 (2010 – 2012 previously). The following table shows the breeding value deductions caused by the base shift:

The following, mentioned breeding value changes of the bulls are net changes, i.e. taking into consideration the base shift.

Bookem is still the dominating sire of sons among the daughter proven bulls. 6 of his so far 33 daughter proven sons make it in the Top-10, and 17 in the Top-100! Big Point (DS: Man-O-Man) remains the figurehead on top with RZG 149 and a lead of 4 points. Having over 1,000 new daughters and a total of 1,790 progeny in his breeding values to date, he still wins slightly for production (RZM 139) and udder health (RZS 112) with unchanged (base shift) RZE 121 (feet and legs 115, udder 121).

Mogul makes a point as a sire of sons. Two of his first three daughter proven sons are in the Top-10: Masato (No.2) and Moll (No.8). Masato is out of the very efficient KAX Debita VG 89 (Man-O-Man x Goldwyn) having its roots in Canada. His daughter proven breeding values are to be handled with care as they are based on just 12 daughters with 100 days milk production and 17 daughters classified for conformation. However, the figures are impressive with RZM 143 (+1,366 kg, +0.28 % fat, +0.08 % protein) and RZE 129 (feet and legs 125, udder 125) and they are clearly above the last genomic values. There are two full brothers of Masato, but they do not have daughter breeding values yet.

The number of daughters of the second highest Mogul son Moll (No.8) may be a little higher with 29, but it is not that high yet. Moll is out of the well-known Dutch Rita family of de Jong. His Snowman dam Rita 727 is, amongst others, a half sister of Shirocco (s. Super) who is on No.75 of the top list. Moll’s recent RZM 126 and RZE 130 are on the exactly same level as the last genomic figures. Having nice milk production (+1,196 kg), he is especially strong for udder (134) with good feet and legs (122). Rear udders are special highlights with teats nicely placed and not too tight in the rear (RZRobot 131). He also excels for functionality with a high RZFit of 134. Based on 1,700 progeny from the genomic period, Moll already proved to be a reliable bull for calving ease (RZKd 115) with clearly above average fertility.

Cipe, new on No.3, is the first Epic son in the Top-10 ever. He is one of 12 new and, therefore, 20 daughter proven Epic sons. He was raised French and descends via Planet and Shottle from a full sister of the frequently used Vaucluse (s. O-Man). Other than most Epic sons, Cipe is very strong for production (+1,796 kg, RZM 136, 69 daughters). Based on the first 22 classified daughters, Cipe breeds tall, late maturing daughters with very good udders (128) and somewhat wider teat placement in the fore and in the rear (feet and legs 109).

The new Schiller on No.7 is a good example for the fact that late sons of a sire of sons often are not the worst. He is the 59th and so far last daughter proven new Snowman son. His Danish dam Tirsvad Alabama EX 91 (Xacobeo x Shottle) already proved her transmission power with the two really successful Bookem sons Bangard (No.6, RZM 135, RZE 133, 19,700 progeny) and Barnesto (No.64, RZM 117, RZE 130, 19,600 progeny). So Schiller is her third very high son and not only the strongest for production among the brothers with RZM 141 and +2,220 kg milk, but he is also in the Top-10 for milk yield of the entire breed. Despite enormous production, udders of the daughters are highly attached (udder 118) and show longer, not too tight teats. However, Schiller’s use may be limited, not only because of below average daughter fertility (RZR 90), but as he is Brachyspina carrier.

There are four more recent Top-10 Bookem sons. So 6 of the Top-10 bulls are Bookem sons, including Big Point (No.1) and Bangard (No.6). One of these is new, Beladi, on No.5. He is out of a Danish cow family as well (dam: Massey x F Halling x V Curtis). Beladi has 165 daughters (144 classified) in his first daughter proven breeding values, as he, for example, was already heavily used as genomic sire (14,818 progeny). Having +0.25 % fat and +0.13 % protein, he is a components sire (+684 kg milk, RZM 128). Within his conformation transmission with RZE 118, his strengths are for udder (123). He is high for udder health (RZS 122) and daughter fertility (RZR 118), so he is high for longevity (RZN 124) and RZFit (136) as well. Milkability RZD 87 should be kept in mind when mating.

Boboy (DS: Shottle), among the already mentioned Bookem sons, is on No.4 and gains clearly for production to RZM 145 now (RZE 119). Booman (No.9, DS: Man-O-Man) and Boom (No.10, DS: Bogart) complete the Top-10. Booman also goes up clearly for production with 212 daughters now (RZM 143), but also loses clearly for conformation as well (RZE 112). Slight losses for RZM (134) and RZE (114) sum up to -3 RZG points for Boom so that he drops by 7 ranks.

More new bulls

The most new sons are Epic sons. However, they rank mostly low and conformation expectations are not met either even though he ranks high in the Interbull list based on thousands of daughters with RZG 141, RZM 127 and RZE 133. Above mentioned Cipe (No.3) as the only one of his 20 sons to date can keep up with him for RZG. So the higher ranking new sons Everest (No.72, RZM 133, RZE 109, DS: Bogart) and Eragon (No.85, RZM 122, RZE 115, DS: Bogart) do not really live up to expectations. Edino (No.103, RZM 118, RZE 120, DS: Bowser) seems to be a good udder sire (126), but he only has 17 daughters. Epilog’s (No.212, RZM 118, RZE 125, DS: Man-O-Man) data with 15 daughters is limited, too. Epoly P RF (No.223, RZM 122, RZE 118, DS: Mr. Sam) is interesting as red carrier, but his development is yet to be seen with 22 early daughters.

Broadway on No.12 is the highest ranking among the additional 7 Bookem sons outside the Top-10. As for many newcomers, the data base of him is still too low with 17 early daughters. Based on this, his figures are very similar to the last pure genomic breeding values. Broadway’s dam (Garett x Wildman) was imported from Braedale-Farms as an embryo from Canada. The great grand dam is a Allen sister of Goldwyn. Broadway combines high milk yield (+1,885 kg, RZM 131) with excellent udders (128). Therefore, he is the second best for udder among the 30 Bookem sons, but one of the weakest (96) for feet and legs (RZE 120). Due to RZM 116 and RZE 112 (feet and legs 115, udder 113), Bork (neu # 102, MV: VH Bismark) would not be worth mentioning, but he is not only a reliable heifer bull with RZKd 115, but he also effectively improves the herd’s calving traits via his daughters (RZKm 114).

With his so far 8 daughter proven sons having an average RZG of over 135, G-Force is not only by far the best Man-O-Man son in the Interbull top list, but also a very successful sire of sons. The highest new G-Force son is Gin (No.24). Gin especially impresses with his high protein transmission of +0.22 % and +835 kg milk (RZM 135, +0.08 % fat). The linear is solid, faultless and actually better than RZE 117 (feet and legs 118, udder 107) may show, especially for udder (dam: Shottle x Damion). Gin should not be used on heifers (RZKd 94). The new G-Force son Georg (No.59, dam: Legend x Shottle) brings even higher components with +0.39 % fat and +0.17 % protein (RZM 123). However, only 16 daughters are included for milk production while already 34 daughters are classified (RZE 113, feet and legs 114, udder 104).

Eppendorf enters high on No.61 as the first daughter proven AltaAirnet son. He is a maternal half brother of, amongst others, Epic. Based on 62 daughters, Eppendorf is an all-round sire with RZM 122, RZE 116 (feet and legs 114, udder 110) who can be used on heifers (RZKd 112) and has good fertility. Milkability should be kept in mind (RZD 87). Pioneer son Pierre also enters new in the Top-100 (No.92). Having solid production (41 daughters, RZM 119), for conformation he offers an uncommon combination of clearly below average stature and capacity (body 73) with good condition (BCS 108). Regarding feet and legs, the Pierre daughters are outstanding (128) and have good udders (111). So these are the best basis for high longevity. Pierre is out of the German family of Laurie-Sheikh at Wendell, Beringstedt (dam: Mr. Burns x Titanic).

Numero Uno has his first son in the top list of daughter proven bulls, Nureno (new on No.105). With solid production transmission (76 daughters, RZM 112), his daughter especially excel with excellent udders (131) very firmly and highly attached. Nureno (dam: Super x Shottle) also shows good figures for daughter fertility (RZR 118) and longevity (RZN 127). Armani (new on No.135) is the first son of the Man-O-Man son Armitage who was not used frequently in Germany. He was raised in the US out of Super x Mac. Armani is by far the best bull with RZKd 131 for calving ease (base: 1,047 births) and this with average calving traits of the daughters (RZKm 101). Having RZM 112, Armani breeds late maturing, dairy daughters (RZE 120, feet and legs 117, udder 121). Michigan is the so far only daughter proven Mixer son and new on No.158. RZM 125 (74 daughters) results from the high components (+0.25 % fat, +0.24 % protein) and less from milk yield (+289 kg). Within RZE 120, Michigan especially scores with highly and firmly attached udders with very good teat placement (udder 129). Michigan who was already frequently used as genomic sire is also a reliable calving ease bull (RZKd 114) and has good fertility. He is out of the successful J family of Hintze, Trebel. His dam is the full sister of amongst others Genesis (Gerard x Mascol) and has another good daughter proven son on rank 173, Godewind (s. Gold Chip), whose figures are only based on 32 daughters. Godewind is an udder sire as well (122, feet and legs 108, RZE 120) and can be used on heifers (RZKd 115). Regarding production transmission, he is clearly different with +1,077 kg milk and negative components than his maternal half brother.

Going up

The two Pioneer sons Pitt and Proud are not new, but clearly went up. Pitt (No.29), compared to his debut in December, goes up by 4 RZM points to 128 with 131 daughters and 3 RZE points to 118 (feet and legs 136, udder 109). Pitt is out of WEH Jane (s. Fibrax) and, therefore, the same family like Michigan and Godewind.

Adding +8 RZG points to 132, Proud (No.83) is one of the strongest winners. His preliminary figures in December are based on just 19 daughters. He has 42 now. He gains impressive 9 points for RZM to 118. Having unchanged RZE 124 (feet and legs 125, udder 124), Proud (dam: Xacobeo x Goldwyn) is a good all-rounder who transmits good milkability (RZD 113).

Going up clearly by 4 RZG points to 126, Terrason ranks on No.171 in the top list now. The Time son out of Stol Joc offers a somewhat different pedigree and is faultless for RZM 123 (+6, 216 daughters) and RZE 122 (feet and legs 116, udder 120) and his daughters are also suitable for robot milking farms (RZRobot 119).

Showtime son Song (No.104, dam: Mr. Burns x Duplex) is in focus with each +3 RZM points (123 now, 80 daughters) and RZE 125 (125, feet and legs 131, udder 107) who has impressive RZRobot 131.

Plus 4 RZM points to 112 can be a clear difference for a conformation sire like Gobi (Goldday x Gibor). Having unchanged RZE 139, base shift, (feet and legs 126, udder 131) he now ranks on No.142.

Further development

Snowboard and Benjamin already made it to second crop, but win clearly now with +8 and +6 RZG points. Snowboard (No.15, Snowman x Gibor) goes up for both production with daughters in second lactation now (RZM 134, +6) and for longevity (+11, RZN 116), with unchanged conformation (RZE 108, feet and legs 113, udder 109). Benjamin (No.16, Beacon x Toystory) increases his RZM by 9 points to 141 now and doubles his daughters to 1,048 (RZE 117, feet and legs 122, udder 107).

Popular Snowflake (No.21, Snowman x Goldwyn) wins for production (RZM 137, +4, RZE 120, feet and legs 105, udder 118).

G-Force son G.Farell (No.22) made it to resale with first figures based on 35 daughters. He now proves the faith in him with his second daughter proven breeding value based on 74 daughters and slightly increased figures: RZM 118, RZE 128, RZS 127, RZN 123, RZR 117, RZFit 138, RZRobot 128.

The early Epic son Enzian (No.63, DS: Man-O-Man) can cope with slight decreases for production (RZM 126, -3) with still strong RZE 125 (feet and legs 118, udder 118). His daughters go up from 36 to 274.

Suran (No.32, RZM 138, RZE 109, feet and legs 103, udder 107) has 7,032 daughters now and many of them are already in second lactation. With this, he increases longevity a bit (RZN 106).

Biathlon (No.46, Beacon x Jeeves, 226 daughters) loses a little for RZM to 118 with his daughters in second lactation now (RZE 126, feet and legs 118, udder 122) while Gordan (Gold Chip x O-Man), directly behind him on No.47, remains constant with 102 daughters for RZM with 125, but slightly loses for RZE to 120 (feet and legs 109, udder 120).

Scipio (No.66, Sudan x Man-O-Man) increases his daughters compared to his debut in December from 60 to 200, but with no impact on his breeding values (RZM 130, RZE 121, feet and legs 115, udder 122).

Maserati‘s (No.84, Man-O-Man x Pronto) daughters from his limited use as genomic bull change barely (482, RZM 121, RZE 129, feet and legs 126, udder 118). He was massively used when he was the highest of the many Man-O-Man sons in the beginning of 2015 and ranked No.1 of the daughter proven list. However, these additional daughters are not in milk yet.

Jentin (No.89, Jeeves x Goldwyn, 173 daughters, RZM 120, RZE 110, feet and legs 108, udder 110) and Mont Blanc (No.93, Man-O-Man x FBI, 182 daughters, RZM 134, RZE 115, feet and legs 112, udder 100) belonged to the bulls with pure test period at first. There are no second crop daughters to date.

Superfit (No.127, Super x Shottle) is really constant with his third breeding value despite increasing daughters to 350 now (RZM 108, RZE 122, feet and legs 118, udder 125).

Red Holstein

4 of the 7 new daughter proven Red Holstein bulls rough up the Top-10.

It seems that Julandy is the best Red Holstein bull for a longer time already, but he has always been on rank 2. The Andy son has now officially occupied the top of the list as he goes up by 3 RZM points to 143 (base shift) on the basis of 1,783 daughters. Many of them are in second lactation now. Regarding conformation, he has an unchanged, fantastic RZE 132 (feet and legs 121, udder 124). Julandy daughters can also be used on robot milking farms (RZRobot 121).

No.1 of December, Red Mist (s. Eburn), had to accept strong losses with doubling his daughters to 434 and is now only on No.8 (RZM 137, -7, RZE 113, +4, feet and legs 122, udder 101).

After Morris (s. Fidelity), constant on No.2 (RZM 148, RZE 107, feet and legs 120, udder 92), follows the highest newcomer, Lostau P. Based on just 23 daughters, he shows somewhat higher figures than his last pure genomic breeding values. Other than his sire Laron P, Lostau is a production sire (RZM 142, RZE 114, feet and legs 111, udder 112) with somewhat less substance of the daughters (dam: Spencer 2 x Canvas). Lostau excels with high components (+0.18 % fat, +0.20 % protein) with more than 1,000 kg milk.

He is followed by two more newcomers having RZG 138, too. Eragon is on No.4 with RZM 132 and RZE 123 based on 26 daughters in the milk breeding value and 14 classified daughters. Even though the figures have to be used carefully, the Elburn son and former No.2 of the genomic top list has a very good debut. He is not only the highest of the so far 10 Elburn sons, but especially by far the best for conformation (feet and legs 127, udder 114). His dam Spencer Pietje proves her transmission power not for the first time. Eragon is a full brother of the somewhat older Red Mist (No.8, please see above) and Elspe (No.25, RZM 125, RZE 113, RZRobot 134) as well as a half brother of amongst others Snow RF.

Closely behind him on No.5 is Kuyt Red who is also new. He is a Destry son and was also born in the Netherlands, but out of the Grietjes (dam: Mr. Burns x Jocko Besne). Kuyt Red combines outstanding production (36 daughters, +1,999 kg, RZM 142) with high overall conformation (RZE 123). The very tall (137) and dairy (132) Kuyt daughters have highly and firmly attached udders anyway (127). Feet and legs are a little low with 91. These figures are just preliminary as they are only based on 18 classified daughters.

Due to the newcomers, Elwood (No.6) and Jerrylee (No.7) drop by two ranks each. The Elayo son and CDH carrier Elwood has 1,631 daughters now and goes up for daughter fertility by 6 points to still low RZR 94 (RZM 135, RZE 112, feet and legs 123, udder 104). The fourth high newcomer is on No.9, Coloredo-P. He is a Colt-P brother of the US sire Morningview Attract Red and descends from the Roxys (dam: Super x Pronto). Conformation is not nessecarily his hallmark (RZE 107, feet and legs 98, udder 109), but extreme milk production of +2,284 kg milk is. With this, he is No.1 within the breed (RZM 133, -0.56 % fat, -0.24 % protein). The figures are already based on 123 daughters.

Top-10 is completed by Moses-Red. Last time, he already had daughter breeding values based on American daughters. His latest figures are based on 66 German daughters now, with a total of 265 daughters. He clearly gains for production by 7 points to 128 and asserts his fantastic conformation values, remaining No.1 for overall conformation with RZE 135 (feet and legs 114, udder 133). Like Kuyt, Moses is out of the combination Destry x Mr. Burns, but out of an US cow family.

What else?

The first daughter proven Ladd P son Label P (No.11, dam: Sunrise x Spencer 2) missed the top list. Label P was extremely used as genomic bull (15,270 progeny). His first daughter breeding values based on 63 daughters result in +0.32 % protein (+235 kg milk, RZM 124). For conformation, he cannot completely realize his genomic level with RZE 111 now (feet and legs 105, udder 115). When mating, please keep in mind that Label P is CDH carrier with low milkability (RZD 82).

There are only two more newcomers ranking in the Top-50, Gloss (No.34) and Legolas P (No.46). Gloss is a Glorious (Nearby x Classic) son out of Fidelity. Based on 44 daughters, he reaches RZM 121 with high components (+0.15 % fat, +0.25 % protein, +223 kg milk) and solid conformation (RZE 109, udder 105). Feet and legs with 123 have to be mentioned. Strengths of the new Legolas P (Laron P x Mr. Burns) are conformation (RZE 121, feet and legs 114) and especially udder here (122), but only based on 16 classified daughters. He is also strong for components (+0.19 % fat, +0.14 % protein) with average milk yield (+32 kg milk, RZM 110).

Among the Laron P sons, Laptop PP (No.12, DS: Mr.Sam) may still be in high demand, not only because he is homozygous polled. Having over 1,000 daughters now, he still increases for production (RZM 120) and conformation (RZE 129, feet and legs 120, udder 128). Latigo P (No.16, DS: Mr. Burns, RZM 134) doubles his daughters to 346 and clearly gains for conformation (RZE 119, +5, feet and legs 110, udder 116) and a little in his weak point udder health (RZS 80, +3). Lanzarote (No.28, DS: Mr. Burns), doubtlessly, is one of the better Laron P sons with RZM 112 and RZE 122 (feet and legs 119, udder 118), but not polled unfortunately. Lutter P (DS: Stabilo) who entered new last time cannot keep up with his level with 56 daughters now (RZM 97, RZE 116, feet and legs 107, udder 122).

And Laron P himself? He is still high in the list on No.17 with 4,063 daughters to date, also due to increased longevity (RZN 121, +4).

Another proven Lawn Boy son, Lasse P (No.26, DS: Classic PS), adds barely new daughters (578, RZM 122, RZE 109, feet and legs 114, udder 109).

Geert (No.13, s. Fidelity) asserts his rank as extreme components sire (+0.77 % fat, +0.30 % protein, RZM 133) with solid conformation (RZE 116, feet and legs 117, udder 104).

The third breeding value of Fageno (#14, Fidji x Ruacana) who was very strongly used as genomic bull is now based on 1,574 daughters (+1,185). There are slight losses for production (RZM 124, -3) and wins for conformation (RZE 116, +2, feet and legs 116, udder 107).

Target (No36, DS: Ramos) shows slight losses (RZM 113, RZE 108), other than his sire Tableau who is still in the Top-25 based on 22,389 daughters (RZM 117, RZE 116, feet and legs 116, udder 120).

Only Jerudo has more daughters with 27,433 (No.48, RZM 119, RZE 93).

Elayo son Edway adds over 1,200 new daughters and increases his RZE (base shift) to 129 (feet and legs 118, udder 126) with RZM 104. The two conformation sires Mad Max (s. Destry, RZE 132, feet and legs 115, udder 131, RZM 104) and Ellmau (RZE 127, feet and legs 117, udder 123, RZM 97) increases their daughters a little.

Lacoste (Larson x Destry) who entered new last time based on 59 daughters goes up for production now with 313 daughters (RZM 117, +4, RZE 117, feet and legs 97, udder 121).
